Requirements
The Tech & Society Initiative (http://techandsociety.georgetown.edu/) is a cross-campus ecosystem creating novel approaches for interdisciplinary collaboration, research, understanding, and action at the intersection of technology, ethics, and governance. The Initiative brings together centers, programs, and departments across Georgetown that are deeply immersed in particular parts of the technology and society equation – ethics, privacy, national security, law, policy, governance, and data – and strengthens connective tissue between them. Contributing members have a significant focus at the intersection of technology and society, multiple participating faculty members, and an enthusiasm for collaborating in interdisciplinary work. Tech & Society is based primarily on the University’s Capitol Campus.
Georgetown’s Tech & Society Initiative seeks a dynamic Managing Director to execute the mission and serve as day-to-day engine of the Initiative. The Managing Director is charged with supporting and overseeing execution of the mission and vision of the Initiative, as set forth at a high level by the Tech & Society Steering Committee and its Chair, and will direct the Initiative’s daily activities The ideal candidate will be passionate about building programs and executing on big ideas. They will be an experienced professional with prior experience and expertise in managing a non-profit organization, program, or coalition, and have experience in and/or knowledge about the intersection of technology and social issues.
Duties include but are not limited to:
+ Hire and supervise staff.
+ Manage the budget.
+ Coordinate operation and use of Tech & Society space.
+ Implement a communications strategy.
+ Help to develop and execute a strategy for fundraising.
+ Oversee convening's.
+ Execute on established Tech & Society Initiative programs.
The Managing Director will staff meetings of the Tech & Society Steering Committee and keep a pulse on the activities, priorities, funding, and needs of all contributing centers. They also will build and enhance the network of Tech & Society, including identifying and supporting opportunities for collaboration among contributing centers. In addition, the Managing Director will serve as a key point of contact for the Initiative, along with the Tech & Society Chair, and will represent the Initiative in meetings within and outside Georgetown.
Work Interactions
The Managing Director reports directly to the Chair of the Tech & Society Steering Committee. Work includes interaction with senior University leadership, high-level government officials, business leaders, foundations and other grant funders, and academic and civil society organizations as necessary to advance the Initiative’s goals. The Managing Director will interact with the University’s Human Resources, Finance, Advancement, and Special Events teams, along with other offices and departments as needed. They will supervise the Tech & Society Events Coordinator, Fritz Family Fellowship Coordinator, student assistants, and other Tech & Society personnel.
They will support the work of the Tech & Society Steering Committee and its committees and subcommittees and nurture the Tech & Society network through a deep understanding of the centers, programs, and departments that comprise it. The Managing Director is responsible for identifying points of overlap and intersection among the Initiative’s contributing members and facilitating opportunities for collaboration. The Managing Director will succeed by elevating Tech & Society as a sum of its parts, rather than as a standalone whole.
Requirements and Qualifications
+ Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
+ 5-10 years of relevant work experience or executive and team leadership experience required
+ Proven track record building teams, programs, and/or organizations
+ Strong financial acumen in the areas of non-profit budgeting, financial management, sustainability, and operations
+ Ability to manage ambiguity and complexity
+ Demonstrated interest in the field of technology and society, with experience or knowledge relating to technology
+ Ability to engage diverse stakeholders across disciplines and viewpoints
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills required
+ Proactive approach to identifying opportunities and solutions
+ Ability to work well as part of a small team and roll sleeves up for other duties as needed
Preferred Qualifications
+ Experience in public interest organizations, think tanks, research organizations, or the technology industry
+ Experience in higher education administration
+ Experience building relationships with funders

The anticipated salary range for this position is $105,000–$110,000.
Pay Range:
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$66,783.00 - $126,720.23
Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
