Imagine loving what you do and where you do it. **Job Category** Underwriting **Target Openings** 1 **What Is the Opportunity?** Bond & Specialty Insurance provides management and professional liability insurance, as well as surety bonds to businesses and non-profit organizations of all sizes. As an underwriter, you will have a dynamic role that blends evaluating and analyzing financial and business risk, building relationships, and selling and negotiating with clients, agents, and brokers. This role is part of the International Surety team which provides many different type of surety bonds to contractors, manufacturers, service contractors, financial institutions, pharmaceutical companies, and other enterprises. Underwriters also analyze business operations, financial statements and evaluate market forces to provide consultative services to contractors. The Managing Director (MD) will lead a team of underwriters who partner with agents and brokers to provide insurance or surety solutions to customers. An MD works with the Head of International Surety to drive the implementation and management of underwriting strategies and decisions to enhance the overall profitability, growth, and retention of business. As an MD, you are strategic, decisive, detail-oriented, and possess a keen ability to understand distribution management, optimize underwriting assignments, and see the 'big picture' perspective in order to drive opportunities. Additionally, you know how to build relationships internally and externally to drive results. Your ability to lead others in independently assessing complex risk and sell our products in challenging markets will contribute to the profitability and success of Travelers. This policy may be changed at the Company’s discretion. **What Will You Do?** + Manage the profitability, growth, and retention of business within a location or region while managing a team of underwriters. + Partner with International and Home Office to execute business unit underwriting strategies to effectively achieve profit and growth objectives. + Collaborate in the underwriting process. + Support relationships with internal partners within the business unit and across the enterprise. + Develop and maintain broker and client relationships to support implementation of strategy. + Successfully manage the business at a portfolio level including underwriting profitability and relationship management. + Anticipate resource needs, sets priorities and liaise with manager to allocate financial and human resources in support of strategy. + Lead and support team while providing strategic direction, coaching, training, and performance management. + Participate in the development of strategic business planning activities that are designed to increase the business unit's presence in the market; retain the appropriate mix of business; and achieve overall growth and profit objectives. + Perform other duties as assigned. **What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?** + Significant applicable underwriting experience. + Prior experience leading or managing others. + Expert level knowledge of products, ability to effectively communicate the regulatory environment, and through understanding of the local insurance and surety markets. + Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to underwrite, market products, identify financial challenges, and analyze available information to make decisions in alignment with our risk appetite. + Ability to create and execute strategic direction across assigned region. + Excellent communication skills with the ability to successfully negotiate in difficult situations with agents and brokers. **What is a Must Have?** + Extensive Surety Underwriting experience. **What Is in It for You?** + **Private Medical Insuran** **ce:** On commencement of employment, you are eligible for single cover provided by Travelers, with the option to add cover for your dependents, at your expense through payroll deduction. + **Retirement:** Travelers will make a core contribution of a percentage of salary to your Pension Plan.
