DAY TO DAY...

Process Design and Optimization: Develop and implement efficient manufacturing processes for assembly operations. If a process needs modified, the ME is the primary team responsible for implementing the change. This includes designing workflows, selecting appropriate tools and equipment, and ensuring optimal placement of machinery to maximize productivity and minimize waste.

Continuous Improvement: Lead continuous improvement initiatives with cross-functional teams to enhance assembly processes, reduce waste, and increase productivity. This includes continuously reviewing current processes, equipment, and layouts to identify opportunities for improvement, actively seeking to incorporate new technologies or enhancements to existing operations. Specifically, these improvements could involve introducing a new tool, adjusting the sequence of operations, or modifying tasks in response to suggestions or incidents (e.g., a safety near miss).

New Product Development: Provide technical expertise and collaborate with design and engineering teams to ensure that new products are manufacturable and that assembly processes are developed and validated early in the product launch phase to ensure a smooth transition to full-scale production.

Coordinate Process Trials: For any new product or process change, the ME coordinates process trials. These trials can range from inspecting a few parts to verify a fixture or process change, to running dozens of parts at different times to ensure the process is working as intended. The ME analyzes data from quality reports and determines any necessary adjustments.

Quality Control and Improvement: Evaluate and improve quality control processes to ensure that assembly operations meet or exceed industry standard. This involves working alongside Quality Engineering and analyzing production data, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing corrective actions to reduce defects and enhance product quality.

Research New Tooling/Processes: Investigate and evaluate new tooling technologies and manufacturing processes to enhance production efficiency and product quality. Conduct feasibility studies and cost-benefit analyses for new tooling and process implementations. Stay up to date with industry trends and advancements in manufacturing technologies.

Training and Documentation: Create and maintain detailed documentation for new tooling and processes, including work instructions, process flow diagrams, and standard operating procedures. Train production staff on the use of new tooling and processes to ensure smooth integration into the assembly line.

Problem Solving: Analyze production data to identify trends, variances, and areas for improvement. Conduct thorough investigations to identify the root causes of manufacturing and assembly related issues. Utilize problem-solving tools such as 5 Whys, 8D, and Fishbone Diagrams to systematically address and resolve problems.
