Manufacturing Engineer - Sustaining

Position Description

This position is part of the Manufacturing Engineering Department and is responsible for coating process development and improvement. The Coating Process Lab supports creation of optical sensor structures utilizing a variety of powder, liquid, and vapor coating technologies. Sustaining in this context consists of design, specification, and repair of tooling, mechanical fixtures/packaging, electrical equipment, process controls, chemical processes, and measurement methods. The Department goals for this Lab are to support a continuous flow of new laser sensor product introductions, reduce the cost of existing legacy products, and continually evaluate all processes to improve efficiency and quality. Multi-disciplinary problem solving as well as data analysis are primary aspects of this position.

Strong commitment to safety – At all times working safely according to local site and applicable regulatory guidelines Successful usage of Designed Experiments (DOE) and Statistical Process Control (SPC) Able to continuously learn new technologies and adapt to a fast-moving manufacturing environment with changing priorities Adapt 1-piece flow concepts to traditional batch process areas Ability to design, draft, and tolerance mechanical parts Knowledge of control systems, electronics, and PLCs Background that utilized a variety of critical measurement and analysis techniques Knowledge of industrial cleaning methods Experience with high vacuum equipment and/or processing Understanding of industrial coating technologies, e.g., evaporative coatings, spin coating, paint spraying, mixing, etc. Understanding of heat transfer, surface forces, particle/powder technology Working knowledge of equipment facilities, including installation and repair for cooling water, electrical supply, and pneumatic equipment Complex problem-solving methodology, utilizing root cause analysis and structured problem-solving tools. Ability to collect, review and interpret statistical data and information to evaluate process changes and implement manufacturing solutions.

Major Tasks:

Outline of the main types of tasks expected while performing the role include;

Provide sustaining engineering and manage change for existing products and processes. Create and maintain detailed work instructions to support equipment operation and processes. Carry out and/or implement process improvements and preventative maintenance, scheduled in conjunction with Manufacturing, while maximizing ongoing equipment efficiency and process quality Work with internal Supply Chain and vendors to identify cost reductions, eliminate quality issues, reduce lead-times, replace obsolete BoM items using rigorous qualification steps, such as FAI. Work on customer RMA events, providing robust containment and resolution and using an 8D report format  Determine root cause and corrective actions to resolve manufacturing issues involving noncompliant product or material.  All actions to include consideration of and compliance with site, company and regulatory environmental, health and safety rules. Implement Lean Manufacturing concepts

Education and Work Experience:

B.S. in engineering or science degree, such as Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, or Optics/Photonics 5+ years’ experience in high-tech Process Engineering, and/or Manufacturing Engineering environment related to deposition onto substrates. Photonics industry an advantage Experience with manufacturing methodologies, procedures, and project management
