Job Purpose

Alpha Technologies Ltd., an EnerSys company, is looking for a Manufacturing Engineer NPI (Contract Manufacturing Support) to join our Power Systems Engineering team in our Burnaby facility. In a key NPI role, reporting to the Engineering Manager Power Systems, the Manufacturing Engineer NPI will focus on supporting the process of bringing new products to market through seamless collaboration with contract manufacturers, including the management and the exchange of accurate engineering documentation and specifications. The ideal candidate will have a deep impact on manufacturing processes, manufacturing engineering, quality control and technical documentation.
 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Contract Manufacturer Support (NPI):

Serve as the point of contact for contract manufacturers and engineering, coordinating with design, development, and contract manufacturing teams. Develop and maintain strong working relationships with contract manufacturers to ensure alignment with company standards and objectives. Address and resolve any issues related to manufacturing processes, quality, or delivery; take ownership of problems and responsibility for solutions. Ensure smooth transition of new products from design to full-scale production. Provide technical support and guidance to contract manufacturers during the NPI phase. Conduct on-site visits to contract manufacturers to ensure compliance with engineering specifications and quality standards.

Engineering Documentation and Specifications:

Evaluate and review the engineering documentation for quality and manufacturing, including drawings, BOMs (Bill of Materials), assembly instructions, and testing documentation. Ensure all engineering documentation and specifications are clear before sharing with contract manufacturers. Review documentation changes and updates throughout the product lifecycle.

Process Improvement:

Analyze existing manufacturing processes at contract manufacturing sites and identify areas for improvement. Collaborate with contract manufacturers to develop and optimize manufacturing and testing processes for new products. Implement Lean Manufacturing principles to enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and improve product quality. Conduct process validation and ensure all manufacturing processes meet regulatory and quality standards. Develop and Review DFx Documents (DFM, DFA).

Quality Assurance:

Ensure that all products manufactured by contract manufacturers meet company quality standards. Conduct regular audits and inspections of contract manufacturing facilities. Develop and implement quality control plans and procedures in collaboration with contract manufacturers. Address and resolve quality issues related to new products during the NPI phase.

Technical Support:

Provide technical expertise and guidance to contract manufacturers. Assist in troubleshooting manufacturing and testing issues and implementing corrective actions. Support the transfer of new products to contract manufacturing facilities, ensuring smooth ramp-up and adherence to specifications.

Documentation and Compliance:

Ensure the CM Maintains accurate and up-to-date documentation of manufacturing processes and quality control measures. Ensure all manufacturing activities comply with relevant industry standards and regulations. Prepare reports on manufacturing quality inspections, FAIs and process improvements. Review Contract Manufacturers’ manufacturing and testing yield reports and follow up as needed to meet the projects’ objectives. 

General:

Actively participate and effectively contribute to the execution of the ESG NPI Engineering product roadmaps. Build and maintain rapport with company-wide stakeholders involved with the NPI as described in the GPDP Process and support a “same-team” mentality. Diligently follow standard operating practices, including flow charts, templates, reports, record keeping, and work instructions for all involved engineering processes. Analyze statistics or other data and recommend immediate action to maintain the level of operational excellence and financial performance according to departmental KPI measurements. Active participation and leadership in appropriate Continuous Improvement activities.
  Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field. 1-2+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering, with a focus on supporting contract manufacturers. Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes, quality control, and lean manufacturing principles. Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with external partners. Proficiency in CAD software and other relevant engineering tools (SolidWorks, AutoCAD or Altium, etc). Ability to travel to contract manufacturing sites as required. Experience with successful developments using V&V (Verification and Validation) processes, with good command of the toolchain and the SW packages used to manage and document the process. Intermediate capabilities in Syteline (or another ERP), PLM, and MS-Office applications. Detailed understanding of engineering documentation including schematics, drawings, and BOMs. Excellent organizational skills with good attention to detail. Good English communication skill both verbal and written. Creative problem solving/troubleshooting skills. Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines. Ability to work in a collaborative cross-functional team environment.


Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of AC and DC Power Modules design and applicable codes and standards – telecom product experience is a plus. Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing certification. Knowledge of ISO standards and regulatory requirements relevant to the industry. Experience in Product Development stage-gate processes. Experience or domain knowledge of advanced processes or practices (i.e., Reliability Engineering, Systems Engineering, Accelerated Life Testing, etc.) is a big plus.
