The Department of Marine Resources (DMR) is seeking applicants with strong scientific skills to fill a vacant Marine Resource Scientist III position in the Bureau of Public Health and Aquaculture located at the West Boothbay Harbor Laboratory.
BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION:This position oversees geographic information system (GIS) and other technological projects for the Bureau including project development, maintenance and management. This position is the oil spill response coordinator for the Department who assesses emergency events, provides closure recommendations and liaises with responder agencies. This position serves as one of the boat captains for the Water Quality Component of the Growing Area West Program, operating small vessels in marine environments. This is a supervisory position that includes the direct supervision of multiple DMR staff members.
Additional duties include:
+ Performing annual staff trainings
+ Conducting shoreline surveys of the coastline
+ Collecting seawater samples from the NH border to the Penobscot River by boat and land
+ Emergency event response including participating in a rotating weekend and holiday on-call schedule
+ Report writing and review
+ This position will also represent DMR at state, regional, and federal meetings and working groups as appointed
Applicants should have experience using GIS software, small boat handling and trailering experience, strong written and oral communication skills, and demonstrate successful supervisory capabilities. Experience in Microsoft Access, ArcGIS Online, R and Python are preferred but not required.
Work is performed under limited supervision.
There will be some remote work opportunities with this position that abide by DMR’s Telework Policy and with management approval.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Advanced education, training, or experience in a scientific, technical, or engineering field with coursework or demonstrated experience in the field of marine resource research and management or another related field; and experience working in a supervisory capacity.
