Title:  Market Lead - Yahoo News Germany

Level: M3

Location:  UK / Germany (UK preferred)

About Yahoo:  At Yahoo News, we are building the best guide to the Internet (and the world) by making it easy to discover the most useful and interesting content online.

We do this through careful curation of content from across our portfolio of content providers, enhanced by the creation of a small amount of original content that helps our audience navigate the topics of the day.

About the role:  We are looking for a dynamic, creative and well-organised individual who will take responsibility for Yahoo News in Germany, and build a team capable of delivering best in class curation.  Initially focused on programming the Yahoo Homepage and social accounts, this team has the potential to extend their remit to encompass curation of other surfaces such as newsletters, apps and beyond.

In conjunction with the wider Yahoo News team you will define editorial standards, police output to ensure we meet these standards, collaborate with our partner management team to curate relationships with key content providers.

The focus of this role (and team) is on curation - choosing the best stories from our pool of content providers and packaging them for our audience across all relevant channels.  In addition, there will be the opportunity to use longer form curation formats - in particular live blogs - to help our users navigate through complex or evolving stories.

About you:  This role requires expert breaking news judgement, compelling headline craftsmanship, strong attention to detail and knowledge of journalistic standards and ethics.

You will have experience in, and a passion for news in all its forms - from a breaking political scandal to the latest reality TV show vote, and be able to identify what is important for our audience immediately.

As a team manager you’ll be comfortable working with a distributed team, managing targets and using data to help decision making - both in realtime and retrospectively.

The role is very much hands on - you will be expected to take direct responsibility for content programming, as well as leading the team.

The role will be responsible for helping build the curation team in Germany, and defining how we work with external agencies to manage out of hours curation and other tasks.

This role will also oversee curation of AOL Germany (www.aol.de) - defining how this responsibility fits with the broader aims of Yahoo News will be an important early decision to be made.

Responsibilities:

Help build engagement with, and trust in Yahoo’s curated content

Take responsibility for programming the Yahoo Homepage and social accounts - including hands on creation of content packages, headlines and (where appropriate) curational content formats.

Proactively monitor incoming content from our key partners, boosting the best and managing overall quality and content mix in order to provide the best possible experience for our audience.

Collaborate with key partners to assess and grow our robust content library and strengthen our programming

Define, execute and police editorial standards for headline writing, content selection and presentation.

Deliver actionable insights from analysis of content performance and user needs

Manage a team of homepage curators - organising rotas, ensuring we have appropriate coverage at all times, and the ability to flex up coverage for key events and breaking news.

Define and execute coverage plans for tentpole events across a variety of content categories

Manage breaking news with urgency, speed, accuracy and attention to detail

Requirements:

Demonstrable experience within a fast-moving news environment, including managing people, teams and projects

Highly organized individual with the ability to create project plans and manage team resources

Exceptional headline creation, copywriting and editing skills with demonstrated experience in past projects aimed at editorial innovation

Willingness to work non-traditional hours, including early mornings, late nights, overnight shifts and holidays and weekends as needed.

Photo editing experience (Photoshop, Canva) would be an asset.

Passion for content curation and creating balanced editorial experiences

Experience covering breaking news stories through curation - experience with live blogging a distinct advantage

Strong analytical and organizational skills

Excellent German and English language skills - both written and oral
