Purpose of Role
The role of market reporter is to provide news coverage and help develop price assessments for the Asia/China LNG market and related industry coverage from sources, conferences and interviews. Through the role, the reporter will assess prices to existing and developing ICIS methodologies, write supporting commentaries for these assessments and produce news and other content to deadline. S/he is responsible for data entry and filing of copy.
S/he will attend conferences and industry events and meets clients/contacts on a regular basis with a view to growing his/her industry knowledge and expertise and contact base.
S/he is responsible for growing his/her own writing and reporting skills.
Key Results Areas (KRAs)
1. Produce quality news consistently for own beatContribute to regular news coverage of the Asia/China LNG markets.
Produce regular on- and off-diary news stories to deadline.
Produce regular analysis pieces.
Produce original value-added content on own beats daily
Conduct daily checks/news searches on relevant websites
Cover news for colleagues as required during absence etc
Contribute copy to other publications as required
Identify, attend and cover relevant conferences
2. Accurate assessment of market prices
Gather market information by telephone, electronic communications and internet
Help development of relevant assessments for emerging Mexico gas and power markets through interaction with industry contacts as well as generating accurate assessments for Americas LNG market.
Ensure price assessments conform to ICIS methodologies.
Ensure accurate and timely entry of data into spreadsheets and databases.
Ensure commentaries comply with the required quality standards and meet deadlines
Keep proper records of communication with sources in compliance with record retention policies
Sub-edit copy produced by colleagues
Check assessments produced by colleagues for accuracy and consistent application of methodology
3. Grow industry knowledge, profile and contact base
Maintain updated contact lists for own markets and news beats in line with policies
Maintain regular telephone contact with a broad section of contacts
Continually build contact base
Network with contacts and clients
Regular face to face meetings with contacts and clients (including conference attendance)
Gain clear understanding of market fundamentals and price drivers
Create and maintain up-to-date supporting documentation for own news beats.
4. Grow personal effectiveness
Develop writing and journalistic skills
Manage personal workload to allow time for training and coaching of self and others
Use and develop foreign language skills to gather market information
Support and contribute to the work of other team members
Be able to provide feedback to editor on possible additions to market coverage – new pricing opportunities/ flow data available etc.
Requirements
Bachelors degree (preferably in journalism or economics)
Fluent written and spoken English
Excellent inter-personal skills
Strong analytical skills
High level of numerical accuracy
Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel
2-5 years journalism experience is preferred
Proven track record of breaking original news
Experience in a fast-paced deadline driven environment
