The scope of this master's thesis is to investigate the detection of lithium plating by ultrasonic testing. Ultrasonic testing of cells with and without lithium plating shall be simulated with the Elastodynamic Finite Integration Technique (EFIT), and it shall be determined with which testing technique/setup lithium plating can be detected and can be distinguished from incomplete wetting.
Battery cells enable the storage of electrical energy and are indispensable for the use of renewable energy and the achievement of global climate targets. A central challenge of battery cell production is knowledge of the cell condition, especially during the so-called cell finalization. When metallic lithium is formed and deposited – so-called lithium plating – this can lead to a reduction in cell capacity, reduced maximum power output, as well as accelerated aging.
