Master Thesis Adaptive L4S Marking
Join our Team

About this opportunity:

L4S (Low Latency, Low Loss, Scalable throughput) is a methodology to adapt the data rates to secure sufficiently good quality for latency critical traffic in mobile networks. Data packets are marked by the bottleneck node when data congestion is detected, and the source application adapts the rate according to the level of CE (Congestion Experienced) marking reported in the feedback protocol. Since different applications can handle the marking differently and sometimes even erroneously, it can be of interest to make the marking algorithm more robust to such situations. Adaptations might also be needed based on for example radio numerology or network load.

What you will do:

The scope of this thesis project is to investigate strategies to adapt the marking to achieve the intended objective even when the rate adaptation in the application does not adhere to the anticipated behavior. The target is to find a robust method which can handle variations of rate adaptation strategies by the applications.

The following steps are envisioned as part of the thesis work:

Understanding current rate adaptation strategies and standards incl. ECN classic (Explicit Congestion Notification), DCTCP (Data-Center Transmission Control Protocol), L4S and its history.Investigate the impact in terms of rate and latency if applications is not following the L4S principles even though it is indicated as L4S.Investigate ways of mitigating such impacts by adjusting the CE marking strategy at the network node.Find ways to make the CE marking strategy on the network nodes adaptive and robust against different types of application behaviors.Build a runtime model of the application behavior on an intermediate node to derive an adjusted CE marking strategy per flow giving optimal performance in terms of rate and latency.Evaluate/adapt the model to also cater for differences in the network properties, numerology, network load etc. that may affect buffering and the CE marking on the network node.

The thesis will be concluded with a report and a presentation for the Ericsson Standard & Technology team.
