For our team of researchers and engineers, we seek for a student to support our research and experiments for optical sensing, with a focus on smart instruments & optical coherence tomography (OCT) for medical robotics.

Develop a cutting-edge proof-of-concept demonstrator for a smart instrument, utilizing multiple optical sensing modalities to enable medical robotics for vitreoretinal surgical applications
Design and setup a proof-of-concept optical system and detection hardware to translate into a smart sensing device
Utilize machine-learning algorithms to analyze data generated by optical sensing-based hardware and software
Screen scientific literature to tailor your solution to drive the state-of-the-art with your research project
Conduct and evaluate experiments based on free space and fiber based optical systems
Your ProfileA bachelor’s and are enrolled in a master’s program in engineering, computer science, physics, or similar, preferably with a specialization in optics & photonics
Good understanding of the fundamentals of optics and smart instruments
Programming knowledge in at least one of the following: Python, Matlab or C/C++
First hands-on experience with optical systems and signal processing algorithms
Ideally experience in the development and integration of data acquisition electronics and scanners
Ideally experience in fiber based or free space optical benchtop systems
Excellent organization, problem-solving & communication skills (English and/or German)
Passion for innovation and enthusiasm for new technologies as well as motivation to work in agile, interdisciplinary teams
