Master thesis - Optical sensing and smart instruments for robotic vitreoretinal surgery
Your Role

Motivation of the work Turning today’s research into tomorrow’s applications – together With a clear focus on user needs, the ZEISS Innovation Hub @ KIT explores new technology and application fields, enabling the transformation of ideas into innovations. Here, students, researchers, entrepreneurs, and ZEISS employees meet at eye level and practice an open-innovation culture. For our team of researchers and engineers, we seek for a student to support our research and experiments for optical sensing, with a focus on smart instruments & optical coherence tomography (OCT) for medical robotics.

We offer

Young, motivated team with a large and active student community

Agile work environment with the possibility to work on various tasks for innovative medical applications

Option for internship before the thesis to better understand the research topic

Modern office culture with flexible working hours. You will

Develop a cutting-edge proof-of-concept demonstrator for a smart instrument, utilizing multiple optical sensing modalities to enable medical robotics for vitreoretinal surgical applications

Design and setup a proof-of-concept optical system and detection hardware to translate into a smart sensing device

Utilize machine-learning algorithms to analyze data generated by optical sensing-based hardware and software

Screen scientific literature to tailor your solution to drive the state-of-the-art with your research project

Conduct and evaluate experiments based on free space and fiber based optical systems

Your Profile

A bachelor’s and are enrolled in a master’s program in engineering, computer science, physics, or similar, preferably with a specialization in optics & photonics

Good understanding of the fundamentals of optics and smart instruments

Programming knowledge in at least one of the following: Python, Matlab or C/C++

First hands-on experience with optical systems and signal processing algorithms

Ideally experience in the development and integration of data acquisition electronics and scanners

Ideally experience in fiber based or free space optical benchtop systems

Excellent organization, problem-solving & communication skills (English and/or German)

Passion for innovation and enthusiasm for new technologies as well as motivation to work in agile, interdisciplinary teams
