**Basic Function:**
**The Material Scientist is responsible for conducting chemical and physical testing to assess material compatibility, with a primary focus on plastics. This role involves performing comprehensive material characterization using appropriate laboratory equipment, analyzing test results, and accurately documenting findings.**
**Responsibilities: **
+ Conduct chemical and physical testing to evaluate the compatibility and properties of materials, especially plastics.
+ Perform material characterization using techniques such as thermal analysis, spectroscopy, rheology, mechanical testing, and microscopy.
+ Develop and execute test protocols following industry standards and company procedures.
+ Interpret data, generate reports, and provide insights on material performance for product development and manufacturing processes.
+ Support failure analysis and provide recommendations for material selection and process improvements.
+ Maintain laboratory equipment, ensure proper calibration, and follow good laboratory practices (GLP).
+ Collaborate with cross-functional teams (engineering, manufacturing, and regulatory) to support new product development and process optimization.
+ Stay updated with advancements in material science and incorporate new testing methodologies when applicable.
+ Ensure compliance with regulatory and industry standards related to materials testing.
**Physical Requirements:**
+ Ability to stand for extended periods while working in a laboratory setting.
+ Ability to lift and handle laboratory equipment and material samples (up to 25 lbs).
+ Dexterity to handle small tools and precision instruments.
+ Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling chemicals and testing materials.
**Mental Requirements:**
+ Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to interpret complex material data.
+ Attention to detail to ensure accuracy in testing and reporting.
+ Ability to multitask and manage multiple testing projects simultaneously.
+ Effective communication skills to collaborate with teams and present findings.
+ Capacity to work independently and make data-driven decisions.
**Required Skills: **
+ **Expertise in material characterization techniques (e.g., DSC, TGA, FTIR, DMA, SEM, mechanical testing).**
+ **Experience with chemical compatibility assessments and polymer analysis.**
+ **Proficiency in statistical analysis and data interpretation.**
+ **Ability to write technical reports and documentation clearly and accurately.**
+ **Familiarity with ISO, ASTM, and other material testing standards.**
+ **Knowledge of material selection for medical devices or regulated industries is a plus**
**Required Experience:**
+ 10-12 years of experience in material science, polymer science, or a related field.
+ Experience working in a laboratory environment with hands-on testing and characterization of materials.
+ Background in medical devices, pharmaceuticals, or industrial plastics is preferred.
**Required Education and Training:**
+ Bachelor’s degree in Material Science, Chemistry, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline
+ Training in material testing methodologies, data analysis, and laboratory safety.
+ Certifications in ISO 17025 laboratory standards or good laboratory practices (GLP) are a plus.
