This role offers experience in a newly purchased state of the art materials analysis laboratory housed within a newly built Engineering Development and Manufacturing facility for cryogenic vacuum pumps, Helium compressors, and cryo chillers. The person awarded with this position will explore material properties and structures with a range of investagatory tools including SEM with EDS, FTIR, Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry, Wet Chemistry Analysis, and more.
The Materials Engineer/Scientist will participate with product and process development, failure analysis, and customer applications. She/He will have the opportunity to collaborate across a larger platform of product companies and unique lab environments within the Edwards and Atlas Copco family.
The experiences in this position will provide the Materials Engineer/Scientist with the opportunity for professional growth through the study of a wide range of materials being used in diverse applications including vacuum, wear, fatigue, cryogenic, and corrosive environments.
Responsibilities:
Design and perform materials experiments in a laboratory setting utilizing state-of-the-art technologies and analytical tools.Assist with failure analysis of a variety of materials and parts used in cryo-coolers, chillers, compressors and other systems by investigating material structures and properties. Provide root cause analysis and recommend corrective actions to Engineering, Quality, and Core Technology teams. Support materials development, evaluation, selection, and qualification in technology development projects (e.g., additive manufacturing) and product development projects, and collaborate with other project team members.Coordinate internal and external resources with supplemental materials evaluation.Prepare technical reports and presentations to report results and findings.Support the daily operation of the Materials Science Laboratory.Knowledge/Skills:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university is required. B.S. in Materials Science and Materials Engineering or Metallurgy. A B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Applied Physics with a minor or coursework in Materials Science will also be considered.Research experience, or at least two years of professional work experience, or an advanced degree (e.g., M.S.) related to materials engineering.Hands-on lab experience with material characterization and testing using analytical instruments. Experience with material sample preparation operating various microscopy instruments (such as optical and digital microscopes, SEM, EDS) and mechanical testing apparatus.
