MATERIALS ENGINEER - R&D Metallurgy

Basic Qualifications: 

B.S. Degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Ceramic Engineering, or similar field from an accredited institution.  Familiarity with common materials characterization techniques, such as metallographic preparation, optical microscopy and mechanical testing. Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

B.S. Degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Ceramic Engineering, or similar field from an accredited institution and 3+ years of experience in high temperature light-weight alloy metallurgy Or M.S. Degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Ceramic Engineering, or similar field from an accredited institution and 1+ years of experience in high temperature light-weight alloy metallurgy Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Familiarity with optical microscopy and metallographic preparation techniques. Proficiency with electron microscopy techniques including backscatter and secondary imaging, EDS, EBSD and WDS. 1+ Years of experience with investment casting, forging or supporting processes.

The Materials Engineer role will be based at the Howmet Operhall Research Center, located in Whitehall, MI. The position’s primary responsibilities include; 

Work as part of a technically diverse team providing materials engineering and characterization support to Howmet facilities globally.  Perform and provide technical guidance for material and anomaly characterization across materials and processes utilized by Howmet Aerospace. Author, review and contribute to technical summaries and reports covering a wide range of metallurgical and materials engineering topics. Regularly communicate with customers, staff and leadership on analysis considerations, progress, and outcomes.  Assist with deployment and qualification of laboratory equipment as well as development of new analytical techniques to further support efforts in key areas. Provide technical support for the electron microscopy department. Perform material or process anomaly investigations independently and as part of a team. Travel to Howmet, supplier and customer locations, as required.
