How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)
SPX is a diverse team of unique individuals who all make an impact. As a Materials Manager, you will manage all aspects of the Materials, Stores and Despatcher functions.
What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)
While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:
Production Planning and Works Order Management
• Manage the creation of a production plan for each customer order that enables (1) material to be received such that the order can be assembled and (2) with productions input assures availability of labour capacity to deliver on time to our customers.
• Ensure all materials required for builds are identified and placed on purchase requisition to meet key production targets/delivery dates.
• Manage the creation of works order families for product builds.
• Ensure serial number traceability is maintained throughout the material handling and assembly process.
• Manage the closure of works orders once builds are complete, ensuring all sub-assembly levels below are closed and all material demand has been satisfied.
• Lead the controlling and recording of the release of any supplementary materials required on builds.
• Work closely with engineering team on new product bills-of-materials (BoMs) to highlight and order long lead items in advance of BoM release.
• Be a key member of the ‘BoM squad’ helping to review new BoMs for accuracy/completeness.
Warehouse and Inventory Management
• Allocate daily workload to Stores and Materials personnel and ensure fast and efficient service to both internal and external customers.
• With Production Management, determine the monthly, weekly and daily build schedule.
• Lead the prioritization of projects within stores to assure the build schedule created with production management is kept on track.
• Direct Stores and Materials personnel in the pulling of parts needed for manufacturing/assembly work orders, kitting them, moving the kit to “inventory ready for production” area and performing the required ERP transactions.
• Lead the receiving of completed sub-assemblies from production, kit sub-assemblies with additional parts and move to inventory ready for production and perform ERP transactions.
• Manage stock integrity - investigating and reconciling issues as and when they arise.
• Manage the annual stock check (inventory) and be the operational point of contact for third-party auditing teams, as well as assist finance by providing stock reports and any other information required.
• Manage the Bonded Stores area and the customer-owned stock held within. Accurately record all stock movements and communicate to the customer auditing teams whatever information they require on a quarterly basis.
• Manage the materials shortages process across the life of programmes. This includes creating weekly reports that highlight all outstanding materials plus any supplier slippages in delivery and communicating this information to key stakeholders.
• Lead obsolescence management by (a) identifying and reporting to finance so provision can be allocated and (b) reviewing with other departments the identified material list to determine proper disposition including if material can be resold.
• Shelf-life management to ensuring stock is rotated to use oldest first, i.e. use FIFO
• Manage the quarantine process of non-conforming parts, including both the associated ERP system transactions and the containment of the non-conforming parts.
Receiving
• Daily workload allocation for Goods-in and Despatch (Receiving) Supervisor.
• Oversee the receipt, system transactions plus movement and storage of newly received material. Ensure that company processes in relation to checks (inspection) and documentation have been accurately completed as part of the material movement processes.
• Organise cover for supplier deliveries for when Goods in and Despatch Supervisor is absent.
• Ensure the warehouse is kept tidy and free from hazards.
• Ensuring the Goods Lift and Forklift LOLER inspections are carried out every twelve months, in line with building insurance requirements.
• Reconcile material receipts with accounting when discrepancy with supplier invoicing occurs.
Packing
• Ensuring all Sales Orders leaving the building meet the customer specified packing instructions, goods are packaged securely and good are packed according to transportation type and country of arrival requirements.
• Have a good understanding of various National/International packaging requirement (Mil/DOD/Def-Stan etc) and ensure we have appropriate packaging to suit.
• Be aware of the various types and methods of packaging available and be able to specify the appropriate type for application.
• Lead the packing individuals who perform the packing to assure they understand and meet the above requirements.
Shipping
• Ensuring Sales Orders are despatched on time.
• Working with QA team to return non-conforming parts and helping to ensure swift resolution by requesting regular updates from the purchasing department.
• Manage the Sales Order delivery date tracker and ensuring it is up to date.
• Liaison with Project Managers and QA Manager to ensure all pre-despatch checks are carried out and recorded.
• Ensuring correct documentation is provided with each shipment.
• Be a key point of contact for any goods-in and despatch queries.
• Ensure all despatches are sent using the most appropriate and economical method in accordance with contractual commitment.
General Responsibilities
• Manage the day-to-day activities of the materials, planning, receiving and packing team in order to provide an efficient and effective service to manufacturing and customers
• Carrying out appraisal/mid and end-of-year performance reviews of direct reports
• Provide technical support to QA team for both Reject Register and Quality Metrics reporting tools.
• Train new staff and nurture/grow/develop existing team members.
• Ensure team members achieve their objectives and provide guidance/assistance where required.
• Be the sign off authority for team members annual leave requests, ensuring cover is in place for each role.
• Ensure all teams members adhere to Health and Safety and Risk Assessment rules and regulations.
• Create and update ISO standard operating procedures for the department, as well as being the department lead in the audits themselves.
Create reports for key materials metrics and other ad hoc reports as required.
