McGuffey Reading Services, part of the Sheila C. Johnson Center at the University of Virginia (UVA), seeks applicants for a temporary, part-time position as a reading teacher/supervisor in our Reading Intervention Program.
Teachers/supervisors will plan, implement, and/or supervise targeted reading intervention lessons for a small group of students. They will work closely with McGuffey’s clinical staff to develop an intensive instructional program to best meet the needs of students. Lessons typically include:
1) Systematic teaching of phonemic awareness, phonics/decoding, and spelling to build word recognition.
2) Targeted fluency instruction to build reading rate, accuracy, and prosody.
3) Comprehension instruction to include both background knowledge/vocabulary and strategy use.
4) Writing instruction, which is woven throughout the lesson.
The successful candidate will:
Have experience teaching elementary or middle-grade students with a focus on reading, writing, and spelling.Have knowledge about current assessment practice in the areas of reading, writing, and spelling. Have experience communicating with families regarding student progress. Have a bachelor's degree Worked as a teacher in a public or private school (a current license is not required). Reading Specialist endorsement or MEd in Reading Education preferred .Applicants must be received by February 8, 2025.
