Description:

Provides clinical Speech Pathology services to adults and pediatric caseloads at acute, skilled, outpatient, home health, and contract levels of care.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Provides diagnostic assessments of communication disorders including disorders of speech, language, fluency, voice, cognition/memory, and swallowing.Devises treatment plans and intervention strategies appropriate for the patient based on evaluation results.Provides therapy services for remediation of communication disorders and/or dysphagia.Ensures appropriate patient and/or family education regarding communication disorders, and/or dysphagia.Recommends and follows through with appropriate discharge planning regarding communication disorders and/or dysphagia.Performs operational duties, including, but not limited to patient scheduling, completion of patient notes and reports, maintenance of complete patient files, completion of patient charges, recording of hours worked and mileage records, for the efficient treatment of patients and smooth operation of the department.Conducts continuing education/inservice activities for departmental staff, hospital personnel, contract agencies and community groups as requested.Demonstrates appropriate, positive and professional interactions with child and adult patients, visitors, families, staff members and medical staff.Assumes personal responsibility for maintaining and developing professional skills and knowledge as it relates to assigned job responsibilities.Assumes personal responsibility for knowing Skiff Medical Center and departmental policies and procedures that are applicable to the job of Staff Speech Pathologist, and abides by all Skiff Medical Center and departmental policies and procedures.Performs other duties and functions as assigned.Cordially deals with the public; cordially receives patients and guests, ascertains their needs, and appropriately directs patients, guests, and callers; assists patients, patients’ families, referring physicians, and third party carriers with regard to patient-related issues in a high volume environment.Schedules patients for medical evaluations, consultations, and treatments at appropriate times.Maintains familiarity with various types of medical insurance to explain these plans. Obtains pre-certification as required by patients’ health care insurers or managed care providers.Operates computer to access e-mail, electronic calendars, and other basic office support.Uses automated systems to access, enter, and edit patient information/documentation.Knows the formal and informal department goals, standards, policies and procedures which may include some familiarity of other departments within the medical center. Is sensitive to the interrelationship of both people and functions within the department. Assures that oral communication (both in person and by phone) is relayed to appropriate staff person.Will demonstrate professional behavior which may include: excellent internal and external customer service skills; avoids demonstrating or participating in inappropriate or unacceptable behavior in the workplace which includes, but is not limited to, sarcasm, disgruntled behavior (e.g. rolling eyes, other body language/gestures of dissatisfaction, verbal comments, and insubordination).Handles administrative, patient, and personnel information with strict confidentiality; protects the reputation and integrity of others through strict confidentiality; demonstrates a high level of trust.Maintain respectful and open communication with fellow coworkers.Maintain CPR certification

EDUCATION: Graduate from an accredited institution with a Master’s Degree in Speech Pathology

EXPERIENCE: None required if qualifications and licensure are met.

LICENSURE: Maintain state of Iowa Speech licensure and meet required standards of professional education.
