Position Summary

The Mechanic III, under direct supervision, assists with repairs and overhauls all mechanical equipment, such as golf carts, lawn mowers, tractors, small 2 or 4 stroke engines, and all commercial university vehicles.

 The ideal candidate has experience working in a team environment and experience with electric golf cart repair and gas/diesel commercial vehicles.  

Hiring Hour Salary: $26.23 minimum, with hiring salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. 

Essential Functions

Performs troubleshooting and repairing the following: golf carts, service vehicles, large landscape power equipment, and other campus-based equipment Performs troubleshooting and repairing all makes and models of cars and trucks up to 26,000lbs GVW owned by the university Performs metal fabrication and makes weld repairs May perform onsite repairs anywhere on campus Delivers high standard maintenance and customer service to all customers Performs routine motor vehicle maintenance such as repairing or replacing tires, hoses, belts, and filters.   Performs repairs to suspension and driveline components such as replacing universal joints, shocks, struts, and bushings.  Performs minor body repair work and touch-up painting.   Performs safety and emission inspections.  Repairs or replaces brake components.  Services, refuels, and changes oil in vehicles.  Cleans and maintains shop, equipment, and tools.  Performs major motor vehicle repairs.  Operates electronic or computerized diagnostic equipment using computer-based technical manuals to identify or verify system and component failures.  Performs all other duties as assigned.  

Additional Functions / Information

Pick up parts/equipment in Houston metro area Transports vehicles to offsite repair shop(s) 

Required Education / Experience

HS Diploma or equivalent 3 years of related experience  Valid Texas Driver’s License (or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment) required with no more than three moving violations or at-fault accidents within the past 36 months and no convictions or deferred dispositions for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the past 3 years 

Required Skills

Ability to communicate clearly both verbal and written Ability to utilize technical equipment used in troubleshooting and repairs 

Preferred Qualifications

1-2 years’ experience in electric golf cart repair Three years of related experience in vehicle maintenance in industry and institutions, including selection, troubleshooting, and maintenance and repair of vehicles and motorized equipment.  Ability to use work order system or maintenance software system Ability to drive a truck with trailer Considerable knowledge of the design and operation of motors.

Physical Demands

Must be able to lift loads no greater than 50 lbs. Must be able to climb stairs, ladders, scaffolding, and work around confined areas with piping and wiring obstructions, as needed, to access equipment. Requires moderate to heavy physical activity, including bending, stooping, climbing, balancing, standing, and walking up to 8 hours per day. 

 Work Conditions

Physical Environment:   Requires exposure to high noise levels, rotating and other potentially dangerous equipment Requires personal protective equipment such as hearing protection, safety shoes, and safety glasses Work Hours and Travel:   After hours work may be required or other work outside the regular schedule may be needed Available on a continuous “on call” basis for response to problems and emergencies that affect campus operations May require periodic travel to classes, conferences, and vendor sites as needed
