About Baytown

 

With a population of more than 77,000, Baytown, Texas, is located in the Gulf Coast region of the United States, just east of Houston, the nation's fourth largest city. Those who live and work in Baytown will find an area rich in history, as well as opportunities for outdoor activities due to its proximity to scenic waterways, namely Galveston Bay, the San Jacinto River and Buffalo Bayou.

 

Founded in 1919, ExxonMobil's Baytown Complex is located on approximately 3,400 acres along the Houston Ship Channel, about 25 miles east of Houston. Employing a workforce of more than 8,500, it is comprised of four manufacturing sites, including one in nearby Mont Belvieu, and a global technology center. These include the Baytown Refinery, one of the largest refineries in the United States, and the Baytown Olefins Plant, one of the largest ethylene plants in the world.

 

Its scope of products includes fuels, lube oils, and chemical compounds used in a diverse range of products, from auto battery cases, diapers and tire inner tubes to pharmaceutical uses, food packaging, trash bags and more.

 

The Baytown area sites are highly integrated, which makes the plants and products more efficient as we develop technologies to make cleaner fuels and work together to operate more safely and reliably.

What role you will play in our team

 

ExxonMobil is actively recruiting for Mechanical Craftsman Intern candidates. Candidates must be currently enrolled in a Welding or Pipefitting degree program to be eligible OR have obtained an Associate of Applied Science degree in Welding or Pipefitting within the last four years.

What you will do

 

Candidates must be able to perform heavy mechanical work that requires several skills including pipefitting, welding, boiler-making, rigging, operating cranes and equipment repair. 

 

Must be able to work in a variety of environments that include both fieldwork and deskwork. Minimum requirements include: 

Maintaining constant awareness of personal safety and the safety of all other personnel. This includes knowledge of unit operation, procedures, and rules.  Being able to work in a safety sensitive environment that includes large rotating equipment and hazardous chemicals.  The manufacturing facility is located outside in the Houston ship channel area. As such, the Intern must be able to withstand both high temperatures and high humidity while wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment.  Must be comfortable working in a loud or dusty environment that could include exposure to fumes, odors or vibration from surrounding equipment.  Being able to ascend and descend a barrel ladder with continuous vertical length of up to 35 feet.  Being able to climb and descend stairs up to a total structure height or more of 150 feet.  Being physically able to wear and navigate through the unit with a respirator if needed.  Being able to pick up a 50 lb. object such as a fire extinguisher.  Being able to work at a desk and operate routine items such as a computer and calculator About you


The preferred Mechanical Craftsman candidate will have or be able to demonstrate the following skills and knowledge: 

 

Skills and Qualifications

Utilization of Hand and Power Tools Use of Pipe Fitters Bluebook Operation and use of motorized equipment and hoisting equipment Piping skills--flanged, welded, and screwed Blueprint reading and Pipe sketching Rigging and hoisting to handle loads Structural steel and plate layout and welding Performing maintenance on all types of fixed equipment (furnaces, boilers, heat exchangers, tower internals, etc.) Operating shop machinery (punches, rolls, shears, etc.) Working knowledge of piping systems design characteristics and repair procedures Job will require mounting and dismounting forklifts, trailers, and truck beds Follows and implements Complex policies and procedures Performs position in a manner that demonstrates knowledge, understanding, and commitment for health and safety of self, others and the surrounding communities and for the protection of the environment Knowledge of reliability and maintenance systems and their purpose Qualified in the Metals craft with knowledge of how other crafts affect Metals work and the overall job Able to use software tools to perform operations and tasks required by the job

 

The Intern will work a 4 -10 schedule but will be released early from work on days they are scheduled to attend class if currently enrolled.  
Interns will be paid for hours worked at ExxonMobil. Hours spent attending classes will not be considered as hours worked, and therefore will not be paid by ExxonMobil. 
Interns will not be eligible for over-time. 
 

 

Preferred Qualifications 

 

At a minimum, candidates must have completed 15 hrs. of required coursework.  Minimum GPA: 2.5; The Intern must also maintain passing grades.  The selected Intern must maintain active enrollment eligibility and maintain successful progress toward and successful completion of the required Welding or Pipefitting Associate degree program if still current in school.  General knowledge of pipefitting, boilermaker and welding fundamentals  Industrial experience with safety culture-based knowledge  NCCER certifications (Boilermaker, Pipefitting, welding) 

  
Selected Candidate must satisfactorily complete a pre-employment screening process which will include an online test, background check, drug & alcohol screen, and a medical and physical job examination. 


Note that this is an Internship Program which will follow a monitored training program timeline with performance reviews at various intervals until internship completion
