Job Description:
The mechanical design engineer is required to complete structural/mechanical tasks associated with the Zephyr airframe which forms part of the Airbus Zephyr program. The program is at the leading edge of the technology and constantly looking for improvements and new developments to enhance its HAPS (High Altitude Pseudo Satellite) capabilities.
This is an exciting position is in a growing team with many interesting program and design challenges. The individual will be part of a mechanical engineering team primarily supporting the build line but as importantly be part of the main design engineering team covering the designs beyond the existing airframe and supporting equipment such as transportation equipment’s and ground control stations.
As our programs advance so will the need to meet increased build rate expectations, so achieving the fast turnaround of emergent build line queries is critical and this is a key role within the engineering team.
Tasks and Accountabilities
Working within a multidisciplinary team the post holder will;
Take responsibility for the collation and resolution of arising build line queriesThe post holder will attend regular shop floor reviews and provide technical status reports on existing issues and take receipt of emergent issuesProvide ‘at elbow’ build line support to production team – resolving emergent issuesProvide detailed design solutions for airframe projects either individually delegated or as part of the wider airframe engineering teamIn conjunction with wider team help develop and define build processes and methods required to build/install/function new design solutionsOversee and guide the build of development aircraft and any supporting equipment required to achieve the design aims in accordance with applicable regulationsProvide technical inputs and advice to the wider product development team on design matters and arising issuesOwn/support any associated testing to clear designs; resulting from issues or new modificationsOwn/support and/or run engineering reviews associated with delegated work packagesWork closely with production and procurement teams to ensure consideration has been given for Design for Manufacture (DfM) aspects early in the design lifecycleCapture agreed changes in-line with change control processes to protect the content and currency of the issued design and build recordContinuous improvement - Proactively identify improvements that could positively affect either quality, product, product performance or the production cycleProvide a pro-active input to and ensure the continuity of your own ongoing professional developmentQualifications, Skills and Experience
Extensive experience in an aviation design roleDemonstrable experience of supporting and working within production/manufacturing environmentPro-active problem solver and interrater of data to resolve emergent build issuesONC or similar relevant qualification/experience in mechanical design/production engineeringProficient user of CAD design/modelling package(s) - ideally using Solid Works.Demonstrable experience of taking a system technical requirement and evolving into a complete design solutionIn depth knowledge of drawing standards specifically BS8888, and tolerancingDesirable
Experience in the use of a PLM toolsetUse of a PDM toolExperience of overseeing/managing design changes within the design recordIdeally experience of design and manufacturing using composite componentsEssential Personal Qualities and Behavioural Requirements
