The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.

 

Scope of Position

Corning Advanced Optics in Keene, NH, is an industry leader in the manufacturing of high precision optical systems for Remote Sensing. This is an exciting location with complete in-house design, engineering, fabrication, and testing disciplines.

In this role as a summer engineering intern you will support product design, analysis, and manufacturing of high-precision opto-mechanical systems. This is a dynamic position for an individual to work as part of Corning Advanced Optics’ Aerospace and Defense engineering team to develop custom precision opto-mechanical systems based on Keene’s world-class precision machining core competency.

Primary duties will involve working within multi-discipline project teams to develop, engineer, build, and test new products.

Social and networking opportunities Weekly tech talks Community involvement Requirements Pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering/Technology Basic understanding of mechanical design practices, mechanical fabrication and assembly techniques. High level of technical curiosity and ability to learn, develop, and advance technical skills in mechanical design, precision engineering and opto-mechanical product development. Strong written and oral communication skills. Must be available for 10 weeks during Summer 2025 (May-August 2025) with a graduation date of December 2025 or later Be interested in working for Corning, Inc after graduation, if presented with a full-time job opportunity. Desired Skills:

Ability to use experimentation to develop basic process knowledge, design prototype test systems, and perform proof of principle testing to validate design approach. Confidence in interaction with all levels of the organization. (Production techs to Sr. Leadership) Experience with 3D mechanical design/CAD software packages such as SolidWorks and familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing. Ability to function on a product development team of multi-disciplinary engineers. Strong organizational skills and detail oriented. Working knowledge of analysis tools such as Matlab or Excel.

​The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly.  Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
