The Opportunity:
Reporting to the Sr Manager Engineering, the Project Engineer manages and completes numerous projects that span multiple engineering disciplines. This position manages and supports the implementation of capital projects within the mill as well as supporting the mill reliability and improvement efforts. The position requires strong project management and technical skills to coordinate different disciplines within the Engineering department, Operations, Maintenance, consulting engineers, and vendors. Primarily, the prospective candidate should have the ability to manage several projects that span multiple engineering disciplines. We will consider candidates with a minimum of 1-3 years in paper or similar industry as a Project Engineer and will provide development to prepare the candidate to move into roles of greater responsibility within the Engineering department.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Develop projects from conception to completion through the Smurfit WestRock Project Delivery Process, a Front End Loaded (FEL) process:
* Develop scopes of work for both projects and contracts.
* Estimate the costs of the projects to varying degrees of accuracy, up to and including as accurate as +/-5%
* Perform technical analyses and compare technical options.
* Prepare funding document requests, including writing reports of project development activities.
* Perform layouts, designs, sketches, and drawings as required to install certain aspects of projects.
* Prepare bid packages for engineering and construction services.
* Manage external consulting engineers on portions of or on larger projects.
* Manage external contractors during construction activities, including safe work practices, OSHA compliance, and quality and accuracy compliance to the project requirements.
* Manage and control cost on projects.
* Manage and promote compliance with mill safety rules, programs, and standards. Assure employees and contractors are instructed in safe work practices.
* Provide technical assistance on mechanical and structural matters as necessary.
* Support and promote usage of the Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) process, Pareto charting, the use of equipment histories to further reduce variability, improve quality, reduce cost and/or enhance reliability.
* Seek and share best practices within the Roanoke Rapids Mill and Smurfit WestRock.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
* Bachelor\u2019s degree in engineering- Mechanical, Chemical, Civil preferred from accredited institution preferred.
* Preferred candidate will have 5+ years related experience with emphasis on engineering of capital projects but will consider a candidate with a minimum of 1-3 years professional experience that has a strong technical aptitude and ability to develop; co-op or related intern experience in a paper industry or similar industry preferred.
* Ability to write reports and business correspondences. Must have good phone skills and be able to communicate with others in a professional, concise manner.
* Analytical skill and strong attention to detail required.
