Mechanical Engineering Internship: Tool design for exhaust flow measurement
Introduction

Within the cluster of Electronic Development, the e-cooling team mainly focus on giving input and perform validations during the design of electronics cabinets, on creating thermal models, and on conducting thermal simulations.

Electronics cabinets with fan cooling have an air exhaust operated by fans to remove the heat load from them. This air exhaust can be at the top or bottom of the cabinet depending on the location of these cabinets. In the factory, there are up to 10-15 of these cabinets per machine connected in parallel to a central air exhaust system. Each fan cooled cabinet has their own flow requirement and hence it is necessary to adjust the exhaust flow in each of these parallel branches.The flow and pressure values for each of these cabinets has to be measured so that the facilities department can use them for right balancing in the exhaust network.

Assignment

For the exhaust connection on top of the cabinet, there is enough space to use measurement devices on top on the hoses, but for the cabinets with exhaust at the bottom, the exhaust hose connection goes through the floor of the cabinet. As the cabinets cant be move away from the floor, the team wants to develop a new tool “Bottom exhaust flow measurement tool”.

Your tasks will include:

Read upon the existing measurement method for top and bottom exhaust cabinet;

Research and develop a flow measurement method based on the air flow profile between the bottom of the cabinet and the floor taking into account turbulence effects;

Investigate if readily available flow measurement devices can be used for this tool or a custom tool needs to be designed;

Collaborate with designers and build this tool f or use in the factory taking into account modularity and ease of use;

Qualify the tool by performing flow measurements in the factory on a cabinet and compare them with existing measurement method.

This is a bachelor/master apprentice internship (to gain work experience) or a bachelor thesis for a duration of 4-6 months. The start date is asap, latest in September 2025.
