Mechanical Engineering Technician

The University of Virginia, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, is seeking applicants for a Mechanical Engineering Technician position at the Center for Applied Biomechanics (CAB).

Required qualifications include:

Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering or related degreeAt least 6 years experience with each of the following (may include experience during graduate work) (Master’s degree may substitute for experience):Designing and performing biomechanics experimentsPerforming biomechanical experiments using advanced test manikinsProgramming and customized data analysis with scientific programing languages such as MatlabHands-on mechanical fabrication and assembly experience

Preferred applicants will have experience in solid mechanics (including finite element analysis), data acquisition systems, motion capture systems, kinematic analyses using rigid body motion transformation, device design using CAD software (e.g., Solidworks) and will have a working knowledge of human anatomy and physiology. Preferred applicants will also have a demonstrated record in preparing project reports, and assisting in the writing of scientific papers. Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.

Responsibilities will include managing, supervising, and assisting with various research projects related to injury biomechanics. This will include project planning, execution, data analysis, and report preparation. This will also include supervising mechanical and biomedical engineering graduate students to various degrees, from educating new graduate students on experimental techniques to supporting senior graduate students in executing projects for which they are responsible. The candidate will also have an active role in the design and execution of the experiments involving cadaveric materials. 

This is a six-month term / Restricted position with the potential for extension based on work performance, availability of projects, and funding.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 6 years of experience in a lab technician role. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. 9 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Licensure: None.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
