Mechanical Maintenance Technician

Chalk Point Generation Station, located in Aquasco, Maryland, is a major power generation facility with a total capacity of approximately 1618 MW. The station comprises nine units, including seven gas turbines, and two steam turbines. This configuration allows the station to effectively meet regional energy demands.

Opportunity Summary

As a Mechanical Maintenance Technician, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the reliability and efficiency of mechanical systems. You will collaborate with a dedicated team to perform preventive maintenance, troubleshoot issues, and oversee contractor activities to maintain high operational standards. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to critical maintenance programs and enhance the overall performance of the plant.

Primary Functions

Participate daily in preventive, scheduled, and repair maintenance activities, ensuring compliance with safety standards and optimizing operational efficiency. Collaborate with team members to execute maintenance tasks, sharing insights to enhance performance and plant reliability. Assist in reviewing spare parts inventory to identify critical components, implementing strategies to minimize equipment downtime and enhance availability. Aid in coordinating and scheduling outage-related mechanical work, ensuring efficient resource allocation to minimize operational disruption. Support maintenance and repairs during planned shutdowns, collaborating with teams to execute tasks safely and efficiently. Maintain and repair all plant mechanical systems and buildings by diagnosing and troubleshooting issues to ensure optimal equipment operation. Perform routine and preventive maintenance (PM) on mechanical systems when conditions permit, utilizing best practices to enhance reliability. Assist in developing and refining PM procedures, ensuring they are comprehensive and effective. Supervise contractors and outside technicians engaged in repairs and upgrades, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and quality standards. Participate in maintaining plant operating manuals, technical references, prints, diagrams, and maintenance records, ensuring documentation is current and accessible. Set up and operate machine shop tools to perform precise machining tasks, ensuring accurate alignment and balance of rotating equipment. Inspect and repair turbines, heat exchangers, pumps, fans, and similar equipment, employing diagnostic techniques to effectively address mechanical failures. Assemble and repair tubing, piping, valves, and fittings exposed to varying temperatures and pressures, ensuring compliance with safety regulations. Expertly assemble, disassemble, repair, and adjust various types of electrical and mechanical equipment, utilizing specialized tools to achieve optimal performance. Fulfill additional tasks assigned by the Maintenance Manager, demonstrating flexibility and a commitment to supporting plant operations.

Working Relationships

The Mechanical Maintenance Technician reports directly to the Maintenance Manager and receives general direction from other plant management. This role involves interfacing with contractors and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) personnel to ensure necessary support and coordination.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection and others must be worn in the performance of some duties. Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.  

Work Schedule

This position offers a Monday to Friday work schedule, during regular dayshift hours. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.

Compensation

Initial starting rate of pay is $48 per hour.

Job Qualifications

High school education, providing a foundational understanding of procedures and instructions. Associate Degree in a technical field, especially with mechanical or maintenance skills, is advantageous. Advanced level of hands-on experience in power-generating facility maintenance, preferably as a power plant mechanic, millwright, or in an equivalent role. Familiarity with preventive maintenance programs and a proven track record of performing routine maintenance duties while collecting essential data for analysis. Technical knowledge includes an understanding of power plant operations and proficiency in maintaining and repairing mechanical systems, including routine troubleshooting. Expertise in assembling, disassembling, repairing, and adjusting both electrical and mechanical equipment. Capability to read and interpret precision measuring equipment for accurate assessments. Ability to respond effectively to audio alarms and variations in sound. Experience in overhauling, repairing, and aligning pumps and motors, as well as performing maintenance on various types of valves. Excellent oral and written communication skills, crucial for effective coordination and reporting. Must possess a valid and unrestricted driver's license, ensuring it remains in good standing at all times.
