Job Summary

Responsible for reviewing and abstracting medical records to fulfill requests for health information. They ensure adherence to privacy regulations, organizational policies, and industry best practices while maintaining the integrity and confidentiality of patient information.

Essential Functions: Review and verify incoming requests for medical information, including subpoenas, patient authorization forms, and other legal documents.
-Confirm the validity and scope of the requests, ensuring compliance with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and other applicable privacy regulations.
-Collaborate with requesters and internal stakeholders to clarify and validate the nature and purpose of the requests.
-Abstract and compile relevant medical information from patient records, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and adherence to request requirements.
-Utilize knowledge of medical terminology and health record documentation to extract relevant data and information.
-Identify and redact sensitive or confidential information in accordance with privacy guidelines and legal requirements.


 

Qualifications

Education
High School Diploma or Equivalent required and Bachelor's Degree Health Information Management preferred

Licenses and Credentials

Experience
Experience in health information management, release of information, or medical record abstraction within a healthcare setting. 2-3 years required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Solid knowledge of HIPAA regulations, state privacy laws, and other applicable privacy regulations.
- Familiarity with medical terminology, health record documentation, and release of information processes.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data abstraction and documentation.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with requesters, patients, and internal stakeholders.
- Proficiency in using electronic health record (EHR) systems, health information exchange (HIE) platforms, and related software applications.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team-based environment.
