The Lead Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting department management in coordination of patient care and clinic operations to include, but not limited to; being the primary Super User directly responsible for assisting providers and clinic staff with immediate EHR concerns, assist providers and clinic staff with outstanding tasks for patient centered quality care, and is a line of contact between clinic staff and department management in giving detailed clinical operations reports regarding clinic staff and provider’s concerns to implement quality improvement measures.  This position is responsible for supporting all four divisions at the OBGYN SPAH office location, which include Maternal Fetal Medicine, Urogynecology, Minimally Invasive Gynecological Surgery and Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Responsibilities

Lead Medical Assistant

 

Participate in the implementation of EVMS and EVMS Medical Group policies and procedures Collaborate with physicians, nurse practitioner and physician assistants from all four divisions at the SPAH OBGYN location; Maternal Fetal Medicine, Urogynecology, Minimally Invasive Gynecological Surgery and Obstetrics and Gynecology Provide individual nursing care and education to address the needs of the patientImprove patient knowledge and understanding of treatment options and plans Take medical histories and record vital signs Assist physician in addressing patient questions and concernsAssist with office surgical and diagnostic proceduresAuthorize medication refills as directed Triage patients to include obtaining vitals and escort to treatment roomAssist with injections under supervision of RNFacilitate referrals to consultants in collaborative care as directed by the physicianCoordinate additional care for patients to include follow-up testing or procedures, scheduling, physician’s orders, and hospital admissions.Changes dressings on woundsMonitor inventory of all devices and clinical suppliesWork closely with billing department for authorizations of birth control devicesEnsure timeliness in scheduling patient appointmentsProvides education during the “birth control consult” visits under the supervision of RNOrganize and manage medications Collaborates with the department leadership in maintaining a smooth clinic workflowMonitors and inventories supplies for clinic and reports to the appropriate supervisorIs one of the designated E.H.R. Super Users for all providers and staff in clinicOversees throughout the clinic that all documents requiring processing are completedResponsible for specific team training of all new clinic staff (patient triage, tasks, paperwork and workflows)Attends Clinic staff meetings, Department meetings, Provider meetings and applicable Grand RoundsProvides daily end-of-shift (AM/PM) report to the department management as necessary.Promote the philosophy, goals and objectives of EVMS, the Department of OB/GYN and the Advanced Gynecologic Surgery Center Program by becoming familiar with and complying with objectives, milestones, policies and procedures.

 

Lead M.A. also functions as an M.A. with the below listed responsibilities:

Explain treatments and procedures to patientsPrepares patients for examinationAssists the physician during examination Collect and prepare laboratory specimenDispose of containment supplies and sterilize medical instrumentsInstruct patients about medication and special dietsPrepares and administers medications as directed by a physicianReconciles allergy lists, medication lists, and smoking status of patient.Chaperones when appropriate and assists during colposcopies, hysteroscopies, and other minor proceduresMaintains clean, well-equipped examination rooms and cleans and sterilizes instrumentsPrepares exam and treatment rooms with necessary instrumentsAssists with scheduling of tests and ultrasoundStocks examination rooms, triage area, and work station with medical supplies for designated teamOpens all charts and prepares charts for day of clinicReceives and completes assigned tasks from providersPerforms phone triage with supervision of LPN/RN, completes team tasks, paperwork and faxes as needed.Scan upcoming appointments for additional medical record information necessary. Obtain medical records from other physician offices, hospitals, labs, emergency rooms, and radiology prior to patient visit.Participate in all staff meetings, education lectures and quality improvement activities.Follow EVMS protocols related to infection control, environmental safety and patient confidentiality. Complete annual recertification for Blood Borne Pathogens, HIPAA Compliance Training, Respiratory FIT and IT Policy.  Maintain current CPR certification and any updates relating to M.A. Certification.Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Successful completion of a Medical Assistant program (or equivalent military training) and certification (CMA or RMA) is required. Completion of BLS class and re-certify every 2 years.

 

-Successful completion of a Medical assistant program. -Must be an experienced M.A. with prior experience in a high-volume clinical practice.  -Ability to balance multiple priorities and tasks.-Ability to make professional nursing decisions under the supervision of the physicians and licensed nurses. -Possess professional interaction skills with physicians, outside offices, pharmacies, referring agencies, hospital personnel and support staff.-Supervisory experience preferred.   Location : Location US-VA-Norfolk
