Responsibilities
Provides basic level of patient care and treatments. Assists with obtaining vital signs, documents chief complaint and all actions taken. Alerts physician of problems/concerns/abnormalities. Assists with obtaining patient history, assists physicians and residents and/or licensed nursing personnel. Performs simple patient procedures, sets up exam/procedure rooms including instruments for minor procedures, prepares and may include administrating medications (excluding IV) under direct supervision of a physician. Obtains lab specimen and fills out requisitions completely and accurately. In addition to the above, the Medical Assistant II functions more independently and coordinates the workflow of MAs when necessary. Obtains authorization for referral (normally in small clinics). Conducts front desk duties such as registration, check-in and scheduling of patients.
Maintains hospital standards of zero tolerance for mislabeled specimens and collects laboratory specimens according to hospital protocolAssists the nurse/physician during examinations, treatments and procedures as requestedRetrieves necessary equipment and suppliesAssists in patient/equipment preparationPerforms follow-up actions as directedCompletes hospital forms per protocolDocuments clinically relevant findings in the patient's record according to hospital protocols and clinical protocolsMonitors and records patient vital signs, weight, positioning, ADL's I&O activity and blood glucose readings per RN instructions, hospital protocols, and standards of careRecords readings in an accurate and timely mannerAssists with patient admission, discharge and transferInitiates orders according to SJHMC time performance standards-STAT-Within 5 minutes, Discharge/Transfer- within 10 minutes, Routine- within 30 minutesConducts front desk duties as needed (check in, registrations, scheduling appointments).Obtains authorization and referrals as neededComplete full patient registration in IDX when registering new patients. Ensure all patient information is updated and current when following up/interacting with patients. Verify insurance eligibility and/or benefits.Qualifications
MINIMUM
High School Diploma or G.E.D. and a graduate of a Medical Assistant Program or completion of an U.S. Armed Forces medical services training program. Candidates who completed a program prior to February 2, 2000 can satisfy the minimum education requirements by providing evidence of direct supervision by the same physician, physician group, or physician assistant for a minimum of 2000 hours to satisfy the minimum education requirements.
Demonstrated experience with computer program utilized for checking-in and scheduling patients required.
