Job Summary:
In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. The Medical Device Reprocessing Technician (MDR) at C&W performs specific duties related to the cleaning, decontaminating, checking, testing, assembling, packaging, wrapping and sterilizing of re-processable and reusable hospital products, Operating Room instruments and the equipment utilized for patient care, in accordance with established standards, policies and procedures. The MDR Technician at C&W also assists with the maintenance of the computerized inventory management system of sterile instrumentation, by creating and updating instrument records and procedural manuals, tracking instruments and loaners, and producing reports.
Duties/Accountabilities:
1. Reprocess critical and semi-critical devices such as surgical instrumentation, respiratory items, laerdal suction units, incubators, and scopes, using steam sterilization, low temperature sterilization and high level disinfection.
2. Checks and tests functionality of medical devices according to Manufacturers Instruction for Use (MIFU). Identifies broken and non-functioning devices and reports these to the MDR RN.
3. Operates departmental equipment such as Steam Sterilizers, Low temperature Sterilizers, Washer Decontaminator, Cart washer, Ultrasonic washer, Dryers, Endoscope Reprocessor, TEE Reprocessor, and Sealers.
4. Participates in routine maintenance of the department’s equipment by cleaning, checking and testing sterilizers, washers and other equipment for functionality. Reports maintenance needs to MDR RN on duty.
5. Sorts, inspects, and reassembles equipment, procedure trays, and O.R. sets according to written procedures.
6. Wraps and labels O.R. instruments, procedure trays, and supplies for sterilization according to written procedures.
7. Fills orders for Medical Device Reprocessing Department according to requests.
8. Maintains inventory levels of sterile supplies.
9. Maintains accurate records to comply with quality assurance standards by performing duties such as reading and documenting biological indicator results.
10. Performs routine cleaning of work and storage areas to maintain a clean, safe and orderly working environment.
11. Maintains the computerized inventory management system of sterile instrumentation, by creating and updating instrument records and procedural manuals, tracking instruments and loaners, and producing reports
12. Participates in education sessions as conducted by MDR management, including in-service sessions, team training huddles, instrument cleaning and assembly practice sessions. Reviews all materials on new and/or changing instruments as updated by MDR management.
13. Performs related clerical duties such as answering telephones, taking messages, maintaining records and filing.
14. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
• Grade 12, successful completion of a recognized Medical Device Processing (MDR) Technician course, plus one (1) year recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience acceptable to the hospital.
