Medical Director, Primary Care - Woodbury Clinic

HealthPartners is hiring for a Primary Care Clinic Medical Director to join our primary care team at HealthPartners Woodbury Clinic.  Being a part of our team means you will have an impact on the care that our patients receive every day. 

You will be part of the largest multi-specialty care system in the Twin Cities. The position requires board-certified/board-eligible in primary care (FM, IM, M/P).  This is an out-patient position where you will have the ability to perform a range of in-clinic procedures.

Position Purpose and Overview:
The Primary Care Clinic Medical Director partners with the Clinic Manager in joint responsibility for the leadership, supervision and outcomes of all clinic activities and day to day operations. Together they work to assure a vibrant practice based on sound stewardship principles, and for the retention and recruitment of clinic physicians and advanced practice providers.
 

The Clinic Medical Director is responsible for ensuring outstanding clinical care, patient satisfaction, and access to affordable care in the context of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s Triple Aim.
 

The Clinic Medical Director provides accountable leadership for all of the HealthPartners Medical Group goals and priorities, including the People, Experience, Health and Stewardship (Four Dimensions) goals.
 

The Clinic Medical Director has a good understanding of systems thinking and planning, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a basic understanding of finance, and an ability to make and execute difficult decisions.

 

Reporting Relationship:
The Clinic Medical Director reports directly to the Primary Care Regional Medical Director (RMD) and is responsive to the Regional Clinic Director (RCD).
 

Working Relationships:
To accomplish the intended outcomes, the Clinic Medical Director maintains professional and effective working relationships with:
 Patients and their families
 The Clinic Manager
 Clinic administrative leadership
 Primary care clinic physicians and advanced practice clinicians
 Primary care clinic nursing, administrative, and support staff
 The Primary Care Regional Medical Director
 The Primary Care Regional Clinic Director
 The Senior Medical Director of Primary Care
 The Vice President for Primary Care, HealthPartners Medical Group
 Department Chairs of primary care and specialty care
 The Director of Primary Care Finances, HealthPartners Medical Group administrative staff, and all others within HealthPartners with whom there are shared goals and responsibilities.
 

Required Qualifications:
 M.D., D.O., or foreign equivalent degree
 Board certification in a primary care specialty (Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Med-Peds)
 Possession of a current Minnesota medical practice license
 Demonstrated communication skills and an ability to work effectively with all disciplines and levels of professionals within a large multi-specialty organization
 A commitment to develop leadership skills
 

Position Responsibilities:
The Clinic Medical Director will first and foremost lead by example:
 Advocate and model the vision, mission, and values of HealthPartners
 Provide care, to all patients, consistent with the Triple Aim.
 Work full-time at HealthPartners (combined clinical and administrative time totaling the equivalent of a 0.8 FTE or greater) and maintain a substantive clinical practice
 Work within the primary care clinic leadership team to achieve organizational goals in all of the Four Dimensions (Health, Experience, Stewardship, and People)
 Assigned projects.
 Understand, support, and lead consistent with the Group Practice Culture
 Promote and represent the primary care clinic within the HealthPartners organization and within the community
 Represent the primary care clinic at the Primary Care Leadership Team (PCLT) meetings
 Attend and participate in HealthPartners Medical Group leadership meetings as directed by the Primary Care Regional Medical Director
 

PEOPLE
 Promote partnership, collaboration, collegiality, and communication with primary care physician and advanced practice provider colleagues. Develop and implement strategies to assess and improve morale among clinic staff and clinicians
 Provide leadership in recruiting new professional staff to the clinic
 Establish effective mentoring of new physicians
 Coordinate orientation and training of physicians and clinicians in the clinic, per medical group primary care guidelines
 Support all clinic physicians’ and advanced practice clinicians’ success through ongoing conversations, coaching and structured meetings
 Conduct monthly group meetings with clinic physicians and advanced practice clinicians
 Set agendas and provide leadership at regular meetings with clinic physicians and other clinicians
 Assure that clinic physicians and advanced practice clinicians fulfill expectations for professional behavior, work quality, effort, productivity and hours. Demonstrate the ability to respectfully hold clinicians accountable to job expectations. Work collaboratively to create specific corrective action plans if job performance is deficient or behavioral concerns arise
 Routinely assess the work status of all physicians and advanced practice clinicians. Actively promote their continuous development
 Conduct annual performance reviews for physicians and advance practice clinicians
 Monitor physician, advanced practice clinicians and overall clinic performance in the American Medical Group Association’s physician satisfaction and employee engagement survey results
 Assure that regular meetings of individual practice teams are held
 Actively support the Healthy Workplace team
 Be responsive to any requests for assistance made by physicians and other clinicians
 

HEALTH
 Assure optimal clinic access and function by partnering with the Clinic Manager to manage physician staffing
 Monitor physician, advanced practice clinician and overall clinic performance in the HealthPartners Medical Group’s dashboard measures of access and health outcomes
 Assure that the clinic meets or exceeds HealthPartners quality goals
 Actively promote and monitor effectiveness of clinic Care Model Process (CMP); introduce and assist with CMP Retraining.
 Review and share health outcomes data, and develop specific action plans for improvement
 

EXPERIENCE
 Commit to a patient-first approach
 Conduct clinic rounding activities on a regular basis with clinicians, clinic support staff and patients within key areas such as care units, radiology, lab, pharmacy and patient waiting areas
 Monitor physician, advanced practice clinician and overall clinic performance in the HealthPartners Medical Group’s dashboard measures of patient experience. Assure that the clinic’s patient satisfaction scores meet or exceed goals
 Review Patient Experience Survey results to each physician and care team with action steps for improvement
 Work with clinic leadership to review and act on formal patient complaints
 

STEWARDSHIP
 Collaborate with the Clinic Manager to create an Annual Budget for the clinic
 Maintain a full understanding of stewardship indicators
 Monitor physician, advanced practice clinician and overall clinic performance in the HealthPartners Medical Group’s dashboard measures of stewardship
 Review monthly stewardship measures and compensation reports. Create and monitor specific clinic and clinician action plans as indicated
 Assure that each physician and advanced practice clinician understands and is making satisfactory progress toward production goals
 Work with the clinic coding and documentation specialists (RCS) to assure that clinician coding and documentation is compliant with policies of the HealthPartners Documentation and Compliance Committee. Assure that clinicians are not consistently under-charging or over-charging for rendered services. In partnership with the Clinic Supervisor, create specific corrective action plans as indicated
 Actively promote group practice building as an important element of health care quality, patient experience, and stewardship
