What Dosimetry contributes to Cardinal Health
Radiation is a medical specialty that uses radiation to treat cancer and alleviate symptoms, and it can also be used for certain non-cancerous conditions. In this treatment, radiation beams are carefully directed at the cancer from a machine that moves around your body.
The Dosimetry job family ensures radiation machines are accurate and correctly calibrated to prioritize patient safety.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
Designs an effective treatment plan by means of computer and /or manual computation that will deliver a prescribed radiation dose and field placement technique in accordance with the Radiation oncologist prescription.Experience and understanding on contours per guidelines.Ensures dose-limiting structures are considered in the design of treatment plans and documents dose in accordance with Radiation Oncologist prescription.Verifies patient prescription, diagnosis, and identification and accurately designs treatment plan with care; respecting patient privacy and rights. Maintains proper communication with the patient and rest of the radiation oncology team. Reports to the designated personnel of any unusual events in plans, and assists in emergency treatments if any. Strictly observes radiation safety measures for the patient and staff.Maintains accurate and timely documentation of patient treatment plans and related documents.Effectively participate simulations and ensure the protocol has been followed.Effectively participates in Quality Assurance and Improvement activities.Effectively communicates with Radiation Therapists in the implementation of the treatment plan including: the correct use of immobilization devices, compensators, wedges, field arrangement, and other treatment variables.Performs calculations for the accurate delivery of the prescribed treatment; documents all pertinent information in the patient record and verifies the mathematical accuracy of all calculations using a system established by the Medical Physicist.Actively assists in intracavitary and interstitial brachytherapy procedures and in the subsequent manual and / or computer calculation of the dose distributions of these treatments.Actively participates in clinical research for the development and implementation of new techniques.Ensures ongoing participation in continuing education in the areas of current treatment planning techniques and advances in dosimetry.Effectively performs other duties and projects as assigned by leadership.
