Summary:
Performs variety of laboratory procedures under supervision, following procedures and instructions as outlined in procedure manual(s) using standard and specialized techniques, instrumentation and equipment on a wide variety of biological specimens to assist physician in diagnosis and treatment of patients. Exercise professional judgment in order to recognize, prioritize, and facilitate varying test requests and workload in efficient manner. Performs duties defined under CLIA role of Technical Consultant, Technical Supervisor, and General Supervisor if delegated.
Formal Education Required:
a. Bachelor of Science degree listing one of the required areas of study (Biology, Chemistry, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science) if degree does not list area of study transcripts must be submitted for equivalency evaluation. Acceptable transcripts must include:
i. Sixty (60) semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, includes either 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination,
AND
ii. Completed one (1) year in approved program or equivalent with an accredited recognized agency or organization (e.g. ASCP, AMT, Summa Lab Tech 1 training program, etc.).
Certifications:
a. Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) or Categorical certification in area of experience from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).
OR
b. Recent graduates from an accredited program with registry eligibility for certification listed above in 2a.
i. Registry eligible staff must obtain certification within 15 months of hire/promotion into Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Laboratory Technologist position.
Experience & Training Required:
a. Ability to read, comprehend and follow detailed laboratory procedures, protocols, and instructions.
b. Use of computers or ability to acquire such skills to operate application packages used by department
c. Minimum of 12 continuing education credits are required to be completed each calendar year for continued employment.
Other Skills, Competencies and Qualifications:
a. Manual dexterity sufficient to operate, maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, identify, and correct technical problems.
b. Ability to work under stress, communicate test results to physicians, nursing units, and/or other authorized personnel in a professional fashion.
c. Assumes accountability for demonstrating behaviors consistent with the expectations defined in the employee handbook, HR and departmental policies.
d. Population Specific Competency: Ability to effectively interact with populations of patients/customers with an understanding of their needs for self-respect and dignity.
e. Demonstrates annual successful completion of all regulatory required testing related competencies.

a. Medium: Exerts 20-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or ten to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force continuously to move objects.
