Medical Laboratory Assistant
Position Summary Performs pre-analytical, processing functions to support testing completed by Medical Laboratory Technicians and Medical Technologists. Assists Technicians and Technologists by labeling and sorting samples and specimens, preparing specimens for testing, sterilizing equipment, and maintaining stock levels of laboratory supplies. Performs waived testing and data related tasks associated with the requisitioning and reporting system used by the Laboratory. Supports department by collecting blood samples and body fluids from patients and performing EKGs when needed. Minimum Qualifications Work Experience Two years of Phlebotomy experience required. Bachelor’s degree in a scientific field or current enrollment in an MLT or MT/MLS program may serve in lieu of two years required work experience.
Education Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Applied Science, Biology, Chemistry, or related field preferred.
Certifications/Licensure Certified Phlebotomist preferred. Job Specific Performance Standards The duties listed below are a summary of the major essential functions of this position.   Performs pre-analytical, processing functions to support testing completed by Medical Laboratory Technicians and Medical Technologists. Receives and process specimens (centrifuging if indicated, delivering to departments and analyzers, aliquoting)  Process specimens sent to referral labs (aliquoting, ordering in portals, packaging for transport) Performs a variety of lab testing support including preparing blood smears in Hematology, plating cultures, making smears, putting slides on gram-stainer, and loading blood culture bottles in microbiology. Performs waived testing. Performs and reportPerforms routine and special cleaning assignments including glassware washing and quality control checks needed to maintain CAP accreditation. Records temRecoRecords daily temperatures and humidity in all departments and notifies Technician/Technologist of nonconformities. Sets up and refills humidifiers as appropriate. Performs inventory count, rotation, and replenishment according to department procedure. Manages MInMaintains current knowledge of hospital policy, JACHO, state and other regulatory requirements. Performs venipuncture and capillary collections and EKGs as needed.
