Responsible for a variety of routine and complex technical tasks in the performance of laboratory tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Principal Accountabilities:
Comfortable with emergency situations such as Massive Transfusion Protocols’ and Emergency Release’, issuing uncrossmatched blood according to laboratory approved procedures
Inspects/issues compatible blood and blood products for transfusion, and performs visual and temperature check on returned blood; disposes of improperly stored/labeled, punctured, outdated, contaminated or hemolyzed blood according to approved procedures
Monitors blood and blood product inventory to ensure adequate supply for patient transfusion, orders blood and blood products when indicated; monitors inventory of reagents and other Blood Bank supplies and notifies Blood Bank Supervisor or Leads when supply is low
Participates in the training and instruction of new MLS’ hired in the Blood Bank
Performs routine and standardized tests as outline in the Blood Bank Standard Operating Procedures (ABO/Rh/Antibody Screen, Antibody Identification, Direct Antiglobulin tests, compatibility tests, phenotyping, elution, etc.); completes proper documentation
Performs special methods as outlined in the Standard Operation Procedure and/or Technical Manual in resolving difficulties or multiple antibodies, ABO discrepancies, Antibodies of Undetermined Specificity, incompatible crossmatch; completes documentation
Performs transfusion reaction investigation and workups, testing and documenting according to Standard Operating Procedure
