Job DescriptionAccountabilities:
Performs and provides microscopic interpretation of gram stains, TB stains and other differentiating stainsOperation and maintenance of the microbiology analyzers and equipmentIdentifies, interprets and reports significant findings from infection control surveillance swabs and clinical specimensKnowledge and/or experience of blood cultures, rapid diagnostic kits and PCRReport significant findings and reportable diseases to the appropriate health care providers (e.g. physician, infection control practitioners, public health unit, etc.)Validation of inventory, supplies and new productsRecognition, isolation, and identification of significant organisms; performs sensitivity testingDisposes of biohazard waste according to protocolsOther related duties as assignedQualificationsMedical laboratory technologist with CSMLS certificationMinimum two years recent experience in a hospital microbiology settingCurrent registration with CMLTO in good standingAbility to recognize microorganisms using colonial and cellular morphology (gram stains)Distinguish colours and recognize smells pertinent to organism identificationFamiliar with serological and biochemical reactions that aid in identification of microorganismsWorking knowledge of specimen set-up protocols and processing in microbiologyMust be authorized to practice in the CMLTO specialty microbiology Strong multi-tasking, critical thinking and problem-solving skillsExcellent organizational and communication skillsProven ability to be a team player; strong interpersonal skillsMust demonstrate Osler's Values of Respect, Excellence, Service, Compassion, Innovation and CollaborationExcellent attendance, punctuality and work ethicMay be required to travel between and work at all Osler sitesAdditional InformationHours: Currently Days/Evenings/Nights, including weekends and statutory holidays (subject to change in accordance with operational requirements)
