Medical Secretary

Position Summary

The Laboratory Medical Secretary's primary responsibility is to maintain correspondence for the pathology staff , in addition is the assigned super user for the pathology dictation system and assists in editing transcribed pathology reports, performs training for the system and conducts competency testing and education on the system.  This role also handles accurate patient records, physician and patient requests for pathology slide referrals for outside consultations. Assists in resolving billing issues for pathology charges and performs other clerical duties as needed.  In the absence of the Executive Medical Secretary this role is required to perform similar duties when required.

Primary Position Responsibilities

1.

Accurately types correspondence for Laboratory Directors and Pathologists, as needed.

2.

Performs edits in the pathology dictation system for the pathologists.

3.

Distributes and prepares patients’ requests for pathology slides in a professional manner following HIPPA requirements.

4.

Properly maintains  all patient records generated from inside or outside consultation reports assuring all pertinent paperwork is intergraded into the patients permanent medical record.

5.

In the designated time frame prepares and sends all reports to the appropriate pathology billing office.

6.

Sorts laboratory mail daily and delivers within the department.

7.

Assists the Executive Medical Secretary with duties as needed and in her absence.

8.

Performs competency testing as the super user for the pathology dictation system and re-educates when needed.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

Required:

High school Diploma

Preferred:

Some post high school training in a medical, pathology, laboratory environment.


Minimum Years of Experience (Amount, Type and Variation):

2 years in pathology office

Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities:

Required:

Basic Microsoft Office, and LIS computer skills. Basic office skills. Medical Terminology.

Preferred:

Experience in a pathology laboratory.
