Medical Support Assistant (Emergency Department)
Summary This position is located in the Nursing Services - Emergency Department at the Rosebud Service Unit in Rosebud, South Dakota. The purpose of this position is to provide clerical support associated with patient care, serve as receptionist, and assist with clerical duties to provide efficient services to patients, visitors, and other health care providers including external entities under the direction of a registered nurse and under the supervision of the nursing supervisor. Responsibilities Maintains the appointment system and the Resource and Patient Management System (RPMS) to accurately reflect patient visits. Performs clerical duties related to patient referrals, notifies appropriate personnel and routes patient records according to established protocols and procedures. Collects and follows up on purchase referred care (PRC) referrals including Medicaid referrals and schedules for patients when appropriate. Follows protocol for collecting, labeling and transporting of laboratory samples. Independently obtains and documents vital sign measurements including blood pressure, temperature, respirations, pulse, oxygen saturation, pain, weight and height; obtaining electrocardiograms, blood glucose with glucometer and throat swabs. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-04: One (1) year of general experience AND/OR two (2) years above high school. Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: GS-05: One (1) year of specializes experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level AND/OR four (4) years above high school. Specialized Experience for GS-05: Answer telephone inquiries and take messages; Prepare requisitions for the charge nurse or supervisor to review; Schedule/Cancel appointments for clinical staff; Maintain and stock nursing unit and patient care supplies; Take and record basic vital signs. GS-06: One (1) year of specializes experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level. Specialized Experience for GS-06: Maintain an appointment scheduling system for medical providers; Schedule/Reschedule appointments for patients; Prepare, place and audit supply/equipment orders; Perform direct patient care duties (take and record vitals); Deliver medications/supplies to patients in the patient care areas/parking lots. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. This position has promotion potential to the GS-06 grade level.
