Summary This position is located in the Branch of Laboratory Services, Division of Clinical Services at Rosebud Service Unit (RSU) in Rosebud, South Dakota. Position serves as a Medical Technician responsible for the application, modification and adaptation of analytical methods and procedures in the performance of a variety of tests/examinations of human tissue, fluids and/or other substances in the clinical laboratory. Responsibilities Performs a variety of clinical laboratory tests/examinations as requested by medical staff for use in clinical diagnosis, patient screening and monitoring patient therapy. Performs preventive maintenance, periodic inspection and performance testing of equipment and instruments with the maintenance of appropriate records. Withdraws appropriate quantities of blood by vein punctures and capillary puncture, instructs patients and/or hospital personnel in the collection process of the specimen. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Individual Occupational Requirements Specialized Experience For positions at GS-4 and above: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. OR Education and Training or GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled. In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-5: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least a GS-4 grade level AND/OR four (4)-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation, if required. GS-6: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least a GS-5 grade level. GS-7: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least a GS-6 grade level. Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples of Specialized Experience: GS-5: Perform a variety of standardized tests and examinations under, normal, technical supervision. Follows written procedures which give carefully detailed instructions on each step of the assigned test and examinations including the techniques and procedures. Perform phlebotomy services, both finger sticks and adult venipuncture. Determine correct blood specimen for each test ordered. GS-6: A working knowledge of the methods, techniques and practices appropriate to medical technology and their practical application to clinical laboratory work. Skill in calibrating and operating analytical instruments sufficient to independently perform recurring tests and analyses. Understanding of related disciplines such as microbiology, chemistry, physiology, anatomy and their relationship to medical technology. GS-7: A thorough understanding and extensive knowledge of the methods, techniques and practices appropriate to medical technology and their practical application to clinical laboratory work. Skill in calibrating and operating analytical instruments sufficient to independently perform recurring tests and analyses. Understanding of related disciplines such as microbiology, chemistry, physiology, anatomy and their relationship to medical technology. NOTE: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
