Summary This position is under the supervision of the Supervisor Clinical Laboratory Scientist for the Kyle Health Center. The Technician is responsible for the application of analytical methods in variety of tests and examinations. Work assignments include such specializations as chemistry, microbiology, hematology, immunology, urinalysis and blood banking. Quality control, calibration, basic instruments maintenance on equipment and testing platforms. Determine the cause, possible significance of improper or imprecise outcomes of results. Initiate dialogue with patients to procure medical history and convey various procedures. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: GS-05: One (1) year specialized experience with the particular knowledge, skill and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. This experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level in the Federal services as described in the vacancy announcement. Examples include: Performing phlebotomy services, finger sticks and geriatric, determining correct blood specimens for each test ordered, use of automated system for reports, make copies of reports, updated health record and answer routine phone call questions. OR Bachelor's degree with major study in medical or clinical laboratory or a related field such as chemistry and/or the biological sciences; OR, a Bachelor's degree in any field that includes at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled. Eligible courses may include: chemistry, hematology, blood banking, microbiology, or the biological sciences. OR Combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. The total percentage equals at least 100 percent to qualify for this GS-05 grade level. GS-06: One (1) year of specialized experience with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal service as described in the vacancy announcement. Examples Include: working methods, techniques and practices appropriate to medical technology and the practical application to clinical laboratory work, calibrating and operating analytical instruments sufficient to independently perform recurring tests and analyses, the use of related experience in microbiology, chemistry, physiology, anatomy and their relationship to medical technology. OR Graduate education or an internship in the field of medical or clinical laboratory or a related field such as chemistry and/or the biological sciences. OR Combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for GS-06 grade level. GS-07: One (1) specialized experience with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. This experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-06 level in the Federal service as described in the vacancy announcement. Examples Include: use of technical methods, techniques and practices appropriate to medical technology and the expanded application to clinical laboratory work, calibrating and operating analytical instruments sufficient to independently perform recurring tests and analyses, apply relationship of microbiology, chemistry, physiology, anatomy application to medical technology and software, and the use laboratory terminology. OR Completed 1 year (18 semester hours) of graduate education that is directly related to the work of the position. OR Combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. The total percentage equals at least 100 percent to qualify for this GS-07 grade level. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
