Summary :The Medical Technologist accurately and efficiently performs a full range of laboratory testing to include pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic processes at all levels of CLIA complexity. Ensures the accuracy of test results, reports laboratory findings to providers, and respectfully addresses situations or decisions to ensure patient concerns or needs are met. Demonstrates professional relationships with patients, families, colleagues, and providers.

Job Description:

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Processes and analyzes blood, urine, tissue, body fluid, and other specimens. Performs waived, moderately complex, and/or high complexity testing using manual or automated methods. Maintains competency in microbiology and/or blood transfusion, as appropriate, to ensure patient needs are met.

Applies critical thinking to ensure quality outcomes meet regulatory agency requirements (CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission, etc.). Assists with regulatory compliance including policy and procedure writing and review.

Recognizes and communicates deviations in technical, quality of specimen, or quality control processes to ensure accurate resulting. Takes action and knows when to escalate as appropriate.

Reports lab results electronically, verbally, and through written documentation. Appropriately documents quality control processes and quality assurance as required.

Is responsible for the accurate use and maintenance of lab equipment. Assists with method validations and implementation of current and new instruments and assays.

Ensures the highest standard of quality, per regulations, and signs off on moderate complexity testing competency assessment for lab team members. Signs off on annual IQCP review.

Performs complex processes that may include collecting bone marrow, performing and staining pathology frozen specimens, performing EKGs, processing and resulting send outs, and resulting moderately complex testing.

Obtains specimens from inpatients and outpatients following proper identification protocols and appropriate techniques to maintain the integrity of the specimens. Prioritizes collection to meet established turnaround times.

Provides training for new lab and non-lab team members to retain top talent.

Maintains supplies and assists with inventory and ordering to ensure the availability of supplies to perform patient care responsibilities.

Performs special specimen collections (i.e., legal specimen collections) to support patient testing and follows up as required by law.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in accredited program

American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) – Medical Technologist (MT) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) or National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA) – Medical Technologist (MT) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) – Medical Technologist (MT)

License required within 6 months of hire

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of twenty-five (25) pounds without assistance

Job classification is exposed to blood borne pathogens (blood or bodily fluids) while performing job duties

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Works in a medical setting with high risk of exposure to blood and body fluids, chemicals, and biohazardous materials

Frequent exposure to sharp objects and instruments

Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock

Occasional contact with aggressive and or combative patients

Use of computers throughout the work day

Frequent use of keyboard with repetitive motion of hands, wrists, and fingers

Required to work scheduled hours. Shifts and hours of work may change depending on patient/business needs. This includes, but is not limited to: overtime, on-call, nights, days, weekends, and holidays. May be expected to work extra shifts or be on-call, as needed.

Position requires compliance with department specific competencies.
