The House Supervisor (HS) reports to the Chief Nursing Officer and is responsible for overseeing clinical operations across the hospital during assigned shifts. The HS is a Registered Nurse (RN) who has demonstrated expertise, leadership, and competence through experience, knowledge, and job performance. The House Supervisor provides direct supervision of staff in key clinical areas, including Medical-Surgical units, the Emergency Department, the Critical Care Unit, the Obstetrics Department, the Extended Care Unit, and the Staffing Office. Additionally, the HS provides indirect supervision for all other hospital departments, ensuring seamless coordination and operations hospital-wide. Key responsibilities include ensuring appropriate unit assignments, taking into consideration patient acuity, age-specific requirements, and diagnoses. RNs are selected for this role by the nursing leadership team and participate on a rotating shift basis to ensure continuous high-quality patient care.

Oversight of Clinical Operations

Responsible for planning and coordinating patient care activities in partnership with MEMC leadership.Coordinates placement of patients based on established criteria and current processes.Serves as the first point of contact for providers, ancillary departments, patients, visitors, staff, and outside agencies to coordinate services, resolve issues, and promote service recovery as needed.Escalates unresolved needs or issues to the correct manager/director/administrator for assistance with resolution.Makes staffing decisions for nursing departments based on patient care needs and the competence of scheduled nursing staff. This includes determining the type and number of staff needed in specific departments, moving staff to departments other than their “home” department, and assigning additional tasks.Adheres to established staffing guidelines and recommends changes to nursing leadership as needed.

Patient Safety Attendant Supervision

Ensures that Patient Safety Attendants are assigned to patients requiring continuous one-on-one attention to maintain patient or other safety.Ensures that orders for Patient Safety Attendants are placed by the provider or, in urgent cases, by an RN, with provider sign-off.Supervises Patient Safety Attendants, ensuring they are following the Patient Safety Attendant Communication Sheet and are aware of any concerns or changes in patient condition.Assures that Patient Safety Attendants receive appropriate breaks and are relieved by qualified personnel during breaks, in accordance with hospital policies.Oversees that Patient Safety Attendants maintain continuous observation of patients in all care settings, including during bathing, toileting, and other activities.Evaluates the ongoing need for Patient Safety Attendants on a shift-by-shift basis and ensures appropriate documentation and communication with providers and other staff.

Compliance with Standards of Care and Regulatory Requirements

Maintains standards for professional nursing practice in all care settings.Advocates for compliance with regulatory requirements and performance improvement initiatives.Assists with implementation and supports compliance with MEMC policies and standards.Participates in creating or revising nursing policies, procedures, or standards as requested.

Support of Clinical Leadership Strategies

Collaborates with nursing leaders, Inpatient Care Coordinators, and Nurse Educators to support and participate in new employee orientation, ongoing competency validation, utilization management, case management, and care planning.Supports required training and educational programs.Contributes information and observations to the appropriate manager or director for performance evaluations as requested.Attends and participates in at least 80% of nursing leadership meetings and supports decisions and outcomes from those meetings.

Steps into direct patient care roles as needed to accommodate changing patient care needs.Identifies personnel, supply, and equipment needs, acts to meet those needs, and communicates any ongoing deficits to the correct leaders.

Performs duties independently, exercising professional judgment in determining the correct course of action for any given event.Remains calm and constructive, making sound judgments in emergency and high-stress situations.Addresses performance, behavioral, or quality-of-care issues as soon as they are identified and escalates issues to the appropriate manager/director/administrator when necessary.Provide positive feedback for staff who meet or exceed performance standards and recommend leadership recognition of outstanding performance.

Patient Safety & Emergency Preparedness

Responsible for ensuring proper staffing and notification of key personnel during emergency codes, including contacting OR staff on call.Trained in emergency preparedness and familiar with the incident command structure (e.g., NIMS training through Workday), serving as the lead command during hospital stand-up situations or emergency responses.

Demonstrates Teamwork and Flexibility

Demonstrates flexibility by assisting others in patient care delivery as appropriate.Willingly floats to various departments when needed, ensuring continuous patient care throughout the facility.

Education:

Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing with an Associate’s degree and current RN Licensure.Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in nursing preferred.

Experience:

A minimum of 2 years as staff RN in Obstetrics (OB), Emergency medicine (ED), or Critical Care (CCU) specialty.1 year supervisory experience required.

License/Certifications:

A valid, current, full, and unrestricted RN license. AK license must be obtained within 6 months of hireMust have American Heart Association (AHA) Heartcode Basic Life Support (BLS). ACLS and PALS at hire or must be obtained within six months of hire and biannually thereafter.NRP and TNCC preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge

Knowledge of nursing care principles, practices, diagnosis, and processes (including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation) to provide professional nursing care to patientsKnowledge of Hospital and Departmental Policies and Procedures to fully comply with, and advocate compliance with on proper application of these measuresDemonstrated competencies in OB, ED, and CCU Nursing Standards.Competency to recognize emergently ill patients and adverse signs and symptoms and to act promptly in emergency situations.

Skills

Knowledge and skills in computer systems including Microsoft Office Applications.Knowledge and skills as a super user in EHR.Proficient in nursing procedures and basic nursing care.Analytical skills to apply scientific principles in operating and monitoring of basic and specialized medical equipment (ex: defibrillator, gastric and thoracic suction, EKG machines, etc.)Excellent oral and written communication skills.Strong, sound decision-making and critical-thinking skills.

Ability to:
