MEP Digital Engineer

Role Overview

A Senior MEP Digital Engineer produces drawings for installation and manufacture  and provides support to the Lead Digital Engineer in the delivery of MEP Digital Engineering objectives across bids and live projects, taking responsibility for significant aspects of a bid/project DE strategy. 

Role Context

The Senior MEP Digital Engineer is a core part of the Digital Engineering Job Family and the Technical Function. The DE team within Crown House provides the capability to fully engineer our projects before commencing work on site ensuring an optimised engineered solution, technical excellence, maximised used of offsite products, reduced waste, and enhanced delivery efficiency. All our engineers are part of our Engineering Enterprise and aligned with our overall strategy to maximise DfMA, Digital Engineering, and Early Engagement.

Principal Responsibilities

Delivers the Technical and LOR Capabilities as set out below. Clearly demonstrates the Excellence+ behaviours set out below. To demonstrate a good understanding of the Digital Engineering Operating Model and assist the DE Lead with tasks as required. To have a good understanding of all aspects of the project with regard to the DE scope Provide mentoring and coaching to less senior Digital Engineering staff. To provide expertise to the DE team in complex technical areas such as plantrooms and risers To deputise for the Lead MEP Digital Engineer whenever necessary with delegated project tasks and holiday/absence cover To assist the Lead MEP Digital Engineer with organising project information and developing project standards and disseminating information clearly to the project Digital Engineering team To assist the Lead MEP Digital Engineer to interface with design teams to ensure DfMA strategy, coordination good practice and buildability principles are incorporated in to design information To attend meetings and interface with CHt Operational Delivery teams as required To communicate with internal and external customers in a professional manner To assist Lead MEP Digital Engineer with essential administration tasks such as developing deliverables schedules, drawing tracking schedules, assessing impact of change, RFCs and RFIs Produce 3d models and drawings for installation, offsite manufacture, and record purposes for mechanical, public health, electrical and Builderswork services Produce 3d models and drawings in accordance with the CHt Digital Engineering standards, CDM requirements, project specifications, employers' requirements and good practice Check all work thoroughly before handing over to the project line manager Check work of others as requested by the Lead Digital Engineer Work as part of a team to produce consistent output To coordinate MEP services and ensure that they are integrated with the building fabric and structure To have a good knowledge of the appropriate technical documents such as British Standards, HTM's, Building Bulletins and any other documents relevant to the type of project To keep up to date with materials and methods of installation used during installation and offsite manufacture Work as directed by the Lead Digital Engineer on a project-by-project basis Maintain and update the CHt Digital Engineering drawing tracker and project dashboard as required by the Lead Digital Engineer Accurately record time spent on projects and note any changes to scope using the CHt Digital Engineering time sheet system To have a good knowledge of ISO 19650 Level 2 requirements, the project BEP and how these requirements are implemented on the project Contribute to the implementation of Digital Engineering by supporting the application of DE tasks and processes at bid, pre-construction, and construction stages. Support the development of Crown House Technologies staff to deliver Digital Engineering in line with their discipline specific responsibilities. Support the Digital Engineering team in maintaining collaborative working relationships with key Stakeholders, both internal and external, to provide DE deliverables. Contribute to best practice and the development of the Digital Engineering service offering through proactive communication with other members of the Digital Engineering team

Qualifications and Experience

Professional qualifications

Level 4 BTEC Higher National Certificate in Building Services Engineering.

Experience

Desired – Previous experience of using Revit Fabrication Parts Essential – Significant experience of producing installation and offsite manufacture drawings for complex plantrooms and risers. Essential – More than 3 years' experience using Revit MEP software and more than 10 years' experience using Fabrication CADMEP Essential – Significant experience within an MEP contractor and offsite manufacture role.

Technical Capabilities

Foundation

Has a knowledge of most MEP services and their methods of installation including ventilation ductwork, domestic water pipework, heating and cooling pipework, above ground drainage, sprinkler systems and cable containment Ability to author and interrogate complex 3D models using Revit MEP and Navisworks with responsibility for own package/section of project. Ability to produce 2D drawings, including schematics, MEP services end sheets for GA single service layouts and multi service sections, risers, and offsite manufacture end sheets Ability to produce drawing to the standard defined by BSRIA BG6 as 4c Has a good knowledge of ISO 19650, including BEP's, LOD requirements, and importance of clash detection and model interrogation. Has a good knowledge of MEP services coordination principles and how they integrate with building fabric and structure. Understands implications of coordination on system resistances and plant duties and can utilise this knowledge to coordinate services in the 3d model Is able to size pipework and ductwork Is able to utilise the standards set out in DW144 to coordinate ductwork in the 3d model Incorporates principles of access, maintenance and buildability good practice when authoring MEP services in a 3d model and can provide alternative solutions where the original design does not meet requirements Has a working knowledge of DfMA and the CHt offsite manufacturing process and can coordinate services in accordance with the DfMA strategy

Competent

Project Management

Is able to fulfil the management processes required of a Construction Manager. Can develop and implement site logistics plans for delivery of the project. Proactively manages interfaces to avoid future issues. Applies a detailed working knowledge of subcontractor contracts and conditions. Ability to influence and provide input for creating the project cost plan/budget. Ability to manage progress against programme, producing short term programmes and assessing resource levels. Supervises operatives, foremen and sub-contractors. Monitors performance / provide guidance where necessary. Has detailed knowledge of the QA and management processes and manages the subcontractor fully, conducting audits as required. Has detailed knowledge of the SMS processes and manages the subcontractor fully, conducting audits as required. Able to review all information and comment on compliance and suitability of proposals. HSE

Ensures that systems are in place for operating permits of various activities. Actively involved in the monitoring of HSE performance of projects. Takes responsibility for one or more environmental issues on the project. Undertakes activities in connection with local schools, charities etc. Produces and approves method statements and risk assessments. Reviews HNM's and proposes actions to prevent occurrence. Produces Permit to Excavate and Control of Buried Services procedures on projects. Fully conversant with COSHH regulations. Actively involved in the safe management of substances hazardous to health on projects. Fully conversant with LOR HSE reporting systems. Contributes data to HS&E systems. Undertakes HSE tours of projects in the company of other senior managers.

DfMA

Has a full understanding of all DfMA components, how they are manufactured, how they are applied in the works and their limitations. Can have an influence on the projects 70/60/30/0 DfMA objectives. Has full knowledge of the contents of the Precast Assembly Manual and feedback improvements as necessary. Reviews and ensures that the ITP is correct for the manufacturing and installation of the products to achieve tolerances. Has full knowledge of the achievable finishes using precast products and ensures that the project specification matches these finishes. Understands the capabilities of Explore and how to apply this where appropriate to the project. Ensures the logistics plans take account of DfMA approaches. Knows the Client specific benefits of DfMA and promotes these with all stakeholders. Can schedule and manage precast delivery schedules. Is involved in the design process such that DfMA is fully incorporated into the design at the early stages.

Digital Engineering

Able to utilise a Digital Engineering model to provide information to create Visual Method Statements and Visual Task sheets. Confidence to show other team members. Able to interrogate a Digital Engineering model to obtain information and data for dimensional control, drawings, schedules, quantifications, progress reports, value engineering and data exchange with Explore. Involved in the application of 4D/5D on construction projects. Manages processes and resources on projects to deliver the Engineering function Digital Engineering Objectives from the Menu. Is able to undertake Digital Engineering modelling in Revit for project construction/logistics purposes, e.g., temporary works, sequence animation and site induction. Identifies appropriate use of High-Definition Scanning (HDS) on construction projects and ensures effective deployment.

Commercial and Business Acumen

Understands Preliminaries in building up a price. Can produce a Bill of Quantities for simple activities. Ensures most effective methods are implemented for optimum output. Knows outputs for an extensive range of works. Advises on how material wastage can be minimised. Ensures that technical related contractual liabilities are met. Ensures that where liabilities are not being complied, they are raised to a higher level. Influences and inputs into creating cost plan/ budgets. Is able to compile accurate technical information to form part of an enquiry package. Identifies requirements for plant and makes recommendations. Contributes to the selection of suppliers and subcontractors. Assesses technical proposals and makes recommendations. Contributes to the performance assessment of supply chain. Contributes to performance assessment of subcontractors. Monitors performance of companies on the Laing O'Rourke Preferred Supplier Agreements. Contributes to the choice of subcontractors, suppliers, and plant at tender stage.
