The Manager of Sterile Processing is responsible for the 24 hour operation of the Sterile Processing Department (SPD). Exhibits efficiency, flexibility and creativity to manage resources to ever changing health care and organizational needs. Promotes interdisciplinary collaboration to impact positive patient outcomes. Supports patient safety initiatives and participates in leadership committees. This position supports Sterile Processing staff with continuing education.
Responsibilities
Manages all aspects of the Sterile Processing department including sterilization or decontamination of equipment and ensures that this complies with all regulatory agencies. Oversees coordination and overall function of Instrument Processing Areas; decontamination; reprocessing; sterilization methods; and biologic testing of sterilization processes and all records to include L&D, Operating Room (OR), ambulatory areas. Provides processing, cleaning and disinfection for hospital wide sterile procedure trays. Oversees cleaning of patient care equipment to include as related to care documented in their Instructions for Use. Monitors cidex OPA usage and documentation throughout the facility and reports to the Infection Control Committee. Works with Distribution Director or designee to facilitate and correct errors with case cart picks. Designs and implements Sterile Processing Department Performance Improvement Program and revises as indicated. Maintains, oversees and is a superuser responsible for the ongoing maintenance of the SPM Instrument Tracking System. Provides education and direction to personnel responsible for administration of central processing functions. Supports interdisciplinary communication with nursing units and ancillary departments to identify and make process improvements. Develops policy and procedure in central processing concepts and assures updates in the policy tracking system. Ensures implementation of and compliance with universal blood and body fluid precautions. Assures that all Sterile Processing staff are licensed and certified according to SDHO/IAHCSMM/CBSPD and OSHA standards. Performs the evaluation process on staff members. Provides feedback to staff on a continual basis. Participates in all hiring, transfers, promotions, discipline and/or termination of Sterile Processing team members. Participates in the selection and development of new Sterile Processing team members for the Sterile Processing Educational program. Coordinates the preceptors for the team members who are enrolled in the Sterile Processing educational program as well as their hours towards their certification. Provides reports, utilization analysis, and budget information to the leadership of Perioperative Services. Works with Perioperative Computer Coordinator to maximize efficient interface between computer systems. Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies and procedures. Lifts a minimum of 30 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 50 lbs. and stands a minimum of length of shift. Active member of the Infection Control Committee at site. Active member of the Joint Commission Committee at site. Active member of any HMH network committees as required. Other duties and/or projects as assigned. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs. Clinical management skills. Minimum of 4 years experience in instrument processing, O.R. and/OR Central Processing Department. Must be an active member of a Sterile/Central Processing Organization. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
Associate's Degree or higher.Licenses and Certifications Required:
Certified Central Processing Technician through Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) [Formerly the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM)] or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).Licenses and Certifications Preferred:
Certification in healthcare leadership (CHL) through HSPA (Formerly IAHCSMM) or Certification in Sterile Processing Management through CBSPD at hire or within 1 year of hire.Our Network
