Summary:

Reports to the Rhode Island Hospital Director of the Cardiovascular Institute. Under the direction of the Chief of Cardiac Surgery is responsible for overseeing the RIH Cardiac Surgery APP team which includes both inpatient and outpatient teams. Leadership role with expectations of honesty integrity credibility and vision to engage staff to achieve overall goals. Ability to motivate and influence the APP staff�s commitment to the organization�s success. Responsible for hiring onboarding educational training and performance evaluations for APP staff. Clinical responsibilities include providing and supervising direct patient care for patients within the Cardiac Surgery service. All essential functions performed in this position reflect the age specific needs of the patients. 

Responsibilities:

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIIES:

Patient Care Responsibilities

Provides and supervises direct patient care by APP team for cardiac surgery patients including pre- intra- and post- management of cardiac surgery patients.

 Provides and supervises direct patient care by APP teams to patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

 Obtains and records detailed patient medical histories performs and records complete and detailed physical examinations records pertinent progress notes in the medical records prepares discharge and follow-up plans and initiates life-saving measures in emergency situations.

Build documentation templates to ensure the delivery of comprehensive care streamline documentation and maximize billing and coding processes.  

Maintains established hospital/department policies procedures objectives quality assurance safety environmental and infection control.

 APP Team Responsibilities

Participates in the hiring of Advanced Practice Providers including initial review of applications selection of candidates and participation in the interviewing and final selection process.

 As an advanced practice provider will work with the physician team to decrease care gap and facilitate throughput. The APP will work with primary inpatient teams on all OSH transfers direct and readmits. Communicates the plan of care and other pertinent information to/from other healthcare providers.

Provides direct leadership to the inpatient and outpatient Cardiac Surgery Advanced Practice Providers including staffing scheduling coordinating staff meetings providing clinical updates reward and recognition and collaboration with other APP teams.

 Develops implements and maintains professional development activities including on-boarding role-specific competencies continuing education and job-related training mentoring and preceptor programs. 

 Conducts mid-year check-ins annual performance evaluations ongoing professional practice evaluations and focused professional practice evaluations for direct reports. 

Monitors category II privilege requirements for procedural APP teams.

 Generates and maintains statistical information relating to the Advanced Practice Providers within the Cardiovascular Institute to demonstrate APP value and productivity. 

Develops and implements electrophysiology curriculum and clinical competencies for electrophysiology APPs. Develop and implement an effective device training program for APPs.

Participates in develops and implements strategic objectives for Advanced Practice Providers to practice at the fullest capacity of their license. 

 Coordinates Advanced Practice Provider participation in M&M APP Practice Council APP Monthly CVI Educational Conference and Quality Assurance Review Programs. 

Performs other administrative functions within the Advanced Practice Provider area as deemed appropriate i.e. serving on appropriate committees.

 

Administrative Responsibilities

Foster programmatic growth of the cardiac surgery service line through inter- and intradisciplinary collaboration. Works with the director of the cardiovascular institute to futher develop the program.

Acts as a liaison between RIH and outside hospitals to navigate patient coordination to RIH. Will also be responsible to navigate coordination for Cardiac Surgery/Structural Heart Programs within the Cardiovascular Institute. Performs all pre- and post-procedure follow up support to patients and physicians. Works with physician and administrative CVI leadership to develop implement and track relevant quality outcome and patient satisfaction measures.

Increase access to care by actively promoting top of license practice for APPs.

Builds dynamic relationships with administration medical directors physicians device technicians nursing and nursing leadership for the creation of inter-collaborative advance practice provider role.

 Restructure inpatient and outpatient flow model to maximize MD and APP to improve patient access to care and facilitate appropriate referrals to cardiac surgery procedures. Applies business and management expertise to set direction measure results resolve problems and achieve operational and financial objectives.

 Attend monthly cardiac surgery leadership and quality meetings. Lead and participate in quality improvement initiatives for the division of cardiology. Complete and publish quality initiatives to pursue recognition as a center of excellence. 

Other information:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Must be a graduate of either a Nurse Practitioner or a Physician Assistant Program.

Nurse Practitioners must have a Master�s Degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program. Nurse Practitioner certification or certification eligible by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).

Physician Assistants must be a graduate of a Physician Assistant Program with a M.S. degree. Passing grade on certifying examination administered by the NCCPA. Certified by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants

Must have active NP or PA license for the State of Rhode Island; Professional license must include prescriptive privileges.

Active DEA license required.

Basic Life Support/Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification required.

Functions with demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of the aging processes human development stage and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

 

EXPERIENCE:

Five years� experience of cardiovascular care. Prior supervisory experience required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Healthcare environment such as acute care hospitals physicians� offices and ancillary healthcare enterprises. Works with medical equipment and has direct patient contact. Any potential hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions including use safety equipment and protective clothing.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

May provide evaluation and management services independently under national provider number (NPI) consistent with regulations governing non-physician provider billing and collections hospital medical staff privileges and payer credentialing. Incumbent functions independently within broad scope of department policies and practices. Consults with superior on specific matters only where clarification interpretation or exception to hospital-wide policy may be required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides direct supervision for Cardiac Surgery Advanced Practice Providers 17-25 providers (Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants).
