Position Overview:

Supervises the technical staff and the analytical activities within the laboratory sections during the assigned shift to generate accurate and reliable test results. Supervises and evaluates the technical performance of assigned staff. Supervises employees within their assigned laboratory section directly. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.Plans, assigns, reviews and evaluates the work of assigned staff to achieve quality testing results, to operate in a fiscally responsible manner, to achieve operational efficiency and to adhere to established policies, practices and procedures. Recommends changes in procedures and techniques as required.Maintains accurate documentation required by regulatory agencies. Maintains accurate records, quality assurance records, and quality control records as required.Resolves technical, operational, system and other related issues on a timely basis. Takes appropriate corrective action when needed.Collaborates with other laboratory supervisory staff members and laboratory administration establishing and implementing goals and objectives. In the absence of the laboratory Section Head, functions as a Section Head as required.Communicates with Capital Health (CH) administrative, medical, nursing and other staff effectively to ensure proper coordination and understanding of services.Performs laboratory and special procedures as required and maintains proficiency in all procedures within designated section. Maintains current knowledge of technical advances in medical technology and management.Evaluates proper safety precautions and infection control measures are being implemented to ensure the safety of patients, staff, and others. Performs proper infection control techniques for testing. Monitors performance of equipment and takes appropriate measures to ensure proper and safe operation of equipment. Monitors performance of preventive maintenance schedule to ensure timely performance.Performs required administrative and clerical functions to ensure proper and efficient operation. Maintains adequate inventory of operating supplies in order for department to run smoothly. Communicates with vendors as required. Inventories equipment and supplies to ensure and adequate level is available to meet functional needs. Prepares timely and accurately a variety of reports and records as required.Evaluates operations, quality assurance, quality control, adequate inventory of supplies and individual performance. Enforces and follows established CH and departmental policies, practices, and procedures.Interviews, hires, and trains employees. Plans, assigns, and directs work. Appraises performance. Rewards and disciplines performance. Addresses complaints and resolves problems. Assures that human and supply resources are utilized cost-effectively and within budgetary limits.Assists Lab Section Head with development, implementation, and maintenance of the Laboratory's section operating budgets.Performs other duties as assigned and possesses a willingness to adapt to changing department demands.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEducation: Bachelor's degree in science field required; Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory sciences preferred. MT (ASCP) or equivalent certification. Must be certified in all areas of the Lab. For Lab Supervisor - Transfusion Services, SBB is preferredExperience: Three years clinical laboratory experience. In addition, one year experience as lead, supervisor, or charge role position.Knowledge and Skills: Intermediate computer skills. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Excellent communication skills.Special Training: National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) program.Usual Work Day: 8 Hours
