Summary The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is soliciting applications from eligible middle school science teachers at public school districts and accredited private educational institutions in the U.S. and its territories to participate in the NIST Summer Institute Program, which will be held June 30 - July 11, 2025, at the NIST Campus in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Responsibilities The NIST Summer Institute Program is a hands-on career development workshop where middle school STEM teachers can use resources from the nation's premier standards and measurement laboratory, NIST. The workshop will provide teachers with instructional materials and ideas to use in their teaching and emphasize the measurement science done at NIST. The aim is to select cutting-edge research at NIST and help the teachers translate this experience into hands-on activities involving classroom-based learning modules. In addition to obtaining ideas and activities to incorporate into lesson plans, teaching tools are provided to allow the teachers to carry out activities they learned at the NIST Summer Institute Program with their students. The NIST Summer Institute Program will offer a world-class opportunity for those teaching our nation's next generation of STEM professionals to learn more about the subjects they teach and the research in those subjects conducted at NIST and to offer a platform from which teachers can inspire their students to pursue careers in STEM. Applicants must be available to commit two (2) full continuous weeks (10 work days, Monday through Friday) from 9:00 a.m. EDT to 4:00 p.m. EDT, June 30 - July 11, 2025, to participate in the NIST Summer Institute Program physically at the NIST Campus in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Requirements Conditions of Employment Eligible Applicants. Teachers in Public school districts and accredited private educational institutions in the U.S. and its territories that teach middle school science subjects. All candidates must be U.S. Citizens. Be available to commit two (2) full continuous weeks (10 workdays, Monday through Friday) from 9:00 a.m. EDT to 4:00 p.m. EDT, June 30 - July 11, 2025, to participate in the NIST Summer Institute Program physically at the NIST Campus in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Be employed for the 2025-2026 school year to teach STEM subjects at grade levels six (6), seven (7), and eight (8) in a public school district or accredited private educational institution in the U.S. or its territories. Each teacher must teach general STEM. Applicants are required to participate in Direct Deposit Note: Applicants are required to attend in person at the NIST Gaithersburg, MD location. A $2,700 travel and housing allowance is offered to teachers traveling from outside the DMV area for this workshop. Teachers must make their own travel and housing arrangements and receive that allowance on the first day of the workshop. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: All applicants must meet the qualification requirements outlined below to be considered minimally qualified for this position. ALL QUALIFICATIONS MUST BE MET BY THE CLOSING DATE OF THIS ANNOUNCEMENT. Be a U.S. citizen. Certified by the state in which you teach or have earned national certification.
