Millwork Engineer
We’re hiring a millwork engineer for one-of-a-kind, high-end residential projects in Seattle, WA. Dowbuilt millwork engineers are responsible for shop drawing creation and fabrication strategy for all projects in the Dowbuilt millwork shop. Through an iterative shop drawing process, they are responsible for the coordination of all materials, fabrication details, and hardware specifications, and maintain the flow of technical information throughout the lifecycle of each project. Millwork engineers collaborate closely with general construction teams, designers, and clients to confirm design intent. They also collaborate with fabricators, manufacturers, and subcontractors to ensure constructability and quality. Millwork engineers are expected to perform site visits to verify site conditions and ensure their documentation will fit the built environment. WHAT YOU’LL DO As a Dowbuilt millwork engineer, you’ll be responsible for: Leadership: + Demonstrate discipline and work ethic that contributes to a strong, collaborative “we’re all in this together” energy that builds positive and supportive team structures. + Foster a sense of professionalism and respect across divisions, subcontractors, and vendors. + Act as engineering project lead; own technical coordination, communication, and task management. + Act as ‘technical liaison’ between GC / designer and fabricators throughout project lifecycle. + Share expertise and train other millwork and layout engineers in graphic standards, coordination methods, and project workflow best practices. + Tangibly advance technical processes, including advancement of standards, methods of work, and production efficiencies. + Maintain awareness of innovative materials and hardware through continued education opportunities (tradeshows, seminars, membership organizations, etc.). Engineering Responsibilities [60-70%]: + Draft technical drawing packages to illustrate design intent and fabrication strategy. + Review and understand architectural drawings and technical specifications. + Collaborate with fabricators and GC teams on build and installation strategy. + Incorporate manufacturer specifications for appliances, fixtures, hardware, etc. into drawings. + Incorporate material characteristics and performance criteria into drawings. + Coordinate and own technical solutions regarding design intent, material limitations, fabrication methods, and manufacturer specifications. + Coordinate constructability reviews with engineering manager and / or shop manager. + Document key ordering and technical criteria for approval prior to production. + Introduce fabrication team to approved drawings via Page-Turns and provide ongoing support throughout fabrication cycle. + Track drawing status and estimate time required to complete shop drawings. + Manage multiple projects and details within defined deadlines. + Maintain motivation to find the right solution given competing constraints. + Create support drawings to aid fabrication process, when needed. + Build relationships with manufacturers, subcontractors, and vendors. Digital Fabrication [20-30%]: + Prepare / coordinate drawings for layout engineer (material takeoffs, CNC programming, parts listing). + Translate technical questions or concerns from GC teams to fabricators throughout mockups, fabrication, and installation. + Create, document, and disseminate take-offs and layouts, especially as it relates to CNC fabrication. + Program and run the CNC machine for production runs, specialized parts, and research and development. Project Management Assistance [5% or less time]: + Coordinate submittals, mockups, material samples, finish samples, etc. in collaboration with project manager and shop manager. + Create RFIs and transmittals as they relate to shop drawings and maintain RFI log in collaboration with project manager. + Track own time against project expectations. + Review and redline subcontractor shop drawings. + Maintain regular communication with project manager - inform them of any at-risk items that may impact schedule, cost, etc. so that they can help address and resolve with GC team. Field Responsibilities [5% or less time]: + Travel to job sites to perform in-field verification of critical millwork dimensions and document site conditions. + Document field dimensions for translation by engineering team. + Document as-built conditions that may inform build strategy through sketches and photographs. + Coordinate solutions to complex build problems and document with field sketches. TRAVEL:  Some local and national travel may be required for this position (less than 10%). WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED To be successful as a Dowbuilt millwork engineer, you’ll need: + Strong drafting & programming software proficiency (Inventor, AutoCAD, Rhino, Alphacam, Mozaik or similar) required. + Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor preferred. + Strong graphic communication skills required. + 3-5 years of drafting / 3D modeling or comparable technical experience required. + Familiarity with CNC machines and fabrication preferred. + Cabinet shop experience/education with basic understanding of tools, machinery, and wood properties preferred, but not required. + Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings and specifications. + Residential design and /or construction experience preferred. + Passion for innovation: research and implementation of new build strategies toward efficient and quality production, value engineering skills. + Excellent team-building skills and follow-through. + All Dowbuilders are held to the following standards around effective communication (both written and verbal): + Clear—main ideas easily identified and understood. + Concise—gets to the point without using unneeded words or images. + Concrete—includes specific examples or explanations. + Persuasive—refer to objective criteria such as industry practice, project limitations, and precedent. + Self-aware—remain flexible, curious, and courteous in all communications. + Respect, honesty, and consistent communication with team, subcontractor, and client. + Able to adapt quickly and effectively to changing circumstances. + Motivated, dependable, and trustworthy professional. + Be able to manage stress and maintain composure in challenging situations. + Strive to continually learn and develop new skills and capabilities. + Demonstrate discretion and treat all proprietary company information as strictly confidential outside (and in some cases inside) the company. + Ability to be an active listener, ask for help, and suggest solutions. + Ability to meet schedule/ deadlines. + Demonstrate and support a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion. + Valid driver's license and transportation to get to work safely and on time.
