CertainTeed Canada operates two surface quarries in British Columbia to supply the required gypsum to the Calgary and Vancouver wallboard plants as well as outside sales. As part of the mine staff, the Environmental Coordinator role ensures that the quarry operations are managed and developed to the highest standards of safety and environmental compliance (air, water and effluent).

To ensure that the highest standards of safety are delivered, fully commensurate and compliant to local, national and company standards. Ensuring a clean, safe and orderly workplace. Provide environmental and technical guidance to the mine on the daily mining plan and resulting environmental impact. On a daily basis, observe operations of the mines to ensure compliance to all environmental permits and regulations. Directly supervise Environmental Technologist(s). Ensure timely and accurate annual reporting to regulators and stakeholders. Including coordination with outside consultants. Schedule, organize and conduct a broad range of environmental monitoring activities, including surface and groundwater sampling, flow measurement, rock and sediment sampling, air quality sampling. Conduct monitoring activities according to standard procedures, including quality control protocols to ensure high quality sample and information collection. Maintain detailed records of field monitoring activities, site inspections, sample conditions, and instrument calibrations (e.g. field datasheets, log book, etc…). Involved in planning and monitoring activities related to the reclamation plan and all environmental management plans, such as water management, invasive weed management, surface erosion and sediment control, and soil and vegetation management. Communicate information related to environmental activities and performance to First Nations Groups, both verbally and in writing when called upon. Identify continuous improvement opportunities in the operations of the Windermere and Kootenay West Mines. Provide leadership to process improvement teams utilizing the WCM toolbox for continuous improvement and the reduction of losses. Review existing permits and coordinate amendments and all related work. Oversee environmental permitting processes and advise management on necessary changes. Develop and maintain company relations with local Indigenous groups. Oversee development and maintenance of environmental management plans to the satisfaction of regulating bodies. Develop and coordinate writing and review of SOP’s, SMP’s and job instructions for the Windermere and Kootenay West Mines operation on the tools, and techniques ensuring effective deployment of best environmental practices. Interact with Ministry of Mines, Ministry of Environment and other Federal and Provincial agencies as required. Organizing and supervising outside contractors as required. Assist environmental and engineering consultants with conducting on site field activities related to monitoring and research programs (e.g., fish and aquatic habitat assessments).
