Minimum Requirements
Education         
Associate degree in Laboratory Science or Associate degree in Laboratory Science with ASCP certification or Bachelor's degree in Laboratory Science or Baccalaureate Degree in Laboratory related Science with ASCP certification
License/Registration/Certifications
Registered with ASCP for ASCP certification roles only
Experience        
1-3 years’ experience in a hospital laboratory.
Medical Lab Technician/Medical Technologist/Medical Lab Scientist
Position Summary
A Medical Lab Technician, Medical Technologist, or Medical Lab Scientist performs various quantitative and qualitative clinical laboratory studies to comply with physician requests for analyses of various blood, body fluids and tissues, to provide data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Must follow established laboratory standards, practices, and procedures. Understands and complies with the Standards of Behavior and department policies, procedures, and regulations.
Core Job Responsibilities
Must be able to provide and understand the specific communication, developmental and treatment needs of patients, families, and visitors ranging in age from neonate-birth to geriatric.
Must be able to make decisions about sample handling and perform testing of samples.
Must be able to perform instrument maintenance, troubleshooting and quality control.
Must be able to maintain accurate records and reporting of test results with the knowledge of critical values.
Must be able to withstand the stress and demands of an active position while responding calmly and efficiently in crisis situations.
Recognize normal and abnormal values.
Must follow all standard operating procedures as written.
Must complete competency and continuing education requirements.
Vision requirements: must be able to pass a color vision test.
Must be able to use critical thinking skills when reviewing data.
Must be able to work as a team member, demonstrating good interpersonal skills.
Must be able to communicate professionally with physicians, management, and staff.
May be required to perform critical tasks in special pathogens lab.
May be required to train new staff members or students.
