General Description:
Performs analyses on blood and body fluids to aid health care providers in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of patients. Moderate and high complexity testing may include manual or automated techniques using sophisticated instrumentation. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: instrument operation and maintenance, troubleshooting assays, evaluating test results for accuracy, resulting test values in a timely manner, and assisting with interpreting results.
Characteristic Duties:
1. Performs various waved, moderate, and high complexity testing procedures on blood and body fluids in the assigned area of Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, or Microbiology. Assessment of techniques and competency takes place during the first six months of employment and annually thereafter.
2. Capable of producing accurate and precise results under time constraints, multi-tasking, and performing in a fast-paced and changing environment while maintaining absolute integrity of test results.
3. Recognizes, confirms, and reports critical test values directly to the physician and documents that the result was called.
4. Performs equipment checks, maintenance, calibration, and quality control on all equipment in assigned laboratory area. Able to recognize, troubleshoot, correct and repair instrument malfunctions (or obtain outside service) and document all maintenance performed.
5. Performs daily quality control on all tests performed. Evaluates quality control data and implements corrective action when necessary.
6. Receives, prepares, and checks reagents. Restocks supplies at the bench. Notifies supervisor when additional supplies are needed.
7. Works cooperatively with peers, gives and receives constructive feedback, and may assist with training of new employees, MLT students, or other medical center personnel.
8. Maintains exceptional communication skills, both verbally and written, in order to effectively interact with department leadership and staff of all levels while complying with HIPPA guidelines.
9. Identifies potential problems, actively searches for solutions and continually provides input to team regarding ideas and recommendations.
10. Maintains a positive demeanor and is professional in both appearance and approach.
11. Observes safety, fire, incremental weather, and infection control standards and regulations.
12. Maintains a clean, neat, and safe working area while observing safety and infection control regulations and universal precautions.
13. Participates in monthly department meetings and continuing education, including proficiency testing.
14. Must be able to accommodate scheduling adjustments, off-shifts, holiday, and weekend work assignments.
15. Performs clerical work and other related duties as assigned.
Performance Standards:
1. Demonstrates competency of all testing procedures assigned during the first six months of employment and annually thereafter.
2. Performs and evaluates quality control daily and calibrations as needed.
3. Performs daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance on analyzers and equipment according to schedules.
4. Reports results of testing accurately and within guidelines explained in the turnaround time policy.
5. Performs end of shift duties including, but not limited to, resolving pending lists, sanitizing and restocking the work area.
6. Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence consistent with hospital-wide and department specific standards.
7. Demonstrates teamwork, cooperation, and respect to internal and external customers alike.
8. Answers phone calls within three rings, with name, department and service oriented demeanor.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Graduate or student graduating within six months with an Associate’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT). Or Associate’s degree in related science field plus Certificate in Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT), recognized by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).
2. Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent is required within six months of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. At least one year of clinical laboratory experience.
2. Experience with Meditech Laboratory Information System (LIS).
